NO.

What HAS changed is that almost EVERY food on the grocery store shelf has some sort of soy product in it. I NEVER used to see soy in EVERY candy bar, gum, even potato chips package 10 years ago. Or, did I just not notice it? I don't think I didn't notice-- I think the food industry has been changing its recipes.

In addition, to soy being more prevalent, so is the use of FAKE sugar. I wanted a little piece of gum the other day, and since I've sworn off fake sugar (including Splenda, which gives me joint aches, aspartame, and saccharin) I decided to get a piece of plain "old fashioned" sugar gum, like Hubba Bubba or something... well, guess what? Even our "sugar" gum has fake sugar added to it now!!! See for yourself!

Now, I stick to Peelu gum, and I try to avoid soy products. I've read that Dr. Mercola says soy lecithin is okay, but I don't really understand why.

Getting back to make up... have make up recipes changed all that much over the years? I'm not suggesting that they're blameless, but I don't see that as the main culprit. I actually have switched to healthier LIPSTICKS, because I lick and bite my lips a lot. Now, I use Dr. Hauschka and some other brand (I forgot the name of it) from Whole Foods, but I can't even be certain they're okay.

PLEASE answer this multi-faceted question: if soy is bad for us, then what about soy in our personal care products? More specifically, if soybean oil is in a lipstick, perhaps, is that a bad thing? Keep in mind, we will probably not be able to tell by the label whether the soybean oil is fermented or not. Dr. Mercola repeatedly tells us if we can't eat it, don't put it on our skin. We can eat soy...

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

Thanks so much for this article. I have been informed many years ago about the dangers of synthetic ingrediants in our personal care products and have endeavoured to keep my children, family and friends up to date with deceiving ingrediant labels. When we buy our food I check the label, it drives my kids mad. So the same goes when I purchase products for our bodies. I am aware of so called 'natural' and synthetic ingrediants. I do not purchase these products. When discussing this subject with friends they are disgusted to find there are no regulations for labelling. Informed people make informed decisions when purchasing products for themselves and their families. I look forward to reading more valuable information from you.

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

"Organic" or not, none of this expensive cr*p is necessary. Virgin olive oil is the only external skin moisturizer you will ever need. Otherwise a proper diet will beautify your skin as well as all your inner organs.

Shampoo is just that: a SHAM of poo. I use plain ivory soap to wash my hair. No more headaches! No more hair loss! I'll bet shampoo is the primary cause of baldness in men.

Plain baking soda with a little water is miraculous as armpit deodorant.

I confess I use Tom's of Maine "natural" toothpaste (as it has no fluoride or sweeteners), and it does have sodium lauryl sulfate. But I rinse my mouth real good! With fluoridated water unfortunately.

Can somebody recommend something cheap and natural and safe to brush teeth with? Baking soda erodes the enamel BAD. So does salt. Is hydrogen peroxide safe for this?

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

I usually use Toms Deodorant and Toothpaste. The Toms deodorant with Lavender and Peach oils seem to work for me quite well....and no yellow stains on my undershirts. The toothpaste is pleasant as well, but can't usually find the non-fluoride kind, but figure it's better than the others.

ALSO, reading all of the posts and clicking on the various sites people have posted/recommended, I would urge those that have an interest to please state it is their website (or affiliate) and they are selling those products. As a consumer, I find it a little unethical for people to go on about a product on this board, show/recommend a link, click on it and you see they are the one's selling the product. Just be honest and say how much you believe in the product and you recommend it...as well as being the one who sells it. No harm in that, but provides full disclosure.

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

I am new here but would like to post two replies to "healthdog" and "katy"

to Healthdog, I am not sure about your comment, "it is not about what you put "ON" your body", etc. I believe that everything you put on your body is absorbed by your skin, and that is why there are such things as nicotine and hormone patches. They are absorbed through your skin. Maybe you were trying to make another point that I did not get, but to me, the outside is just as important as the inside. However, doing research on EWG's website is not the answer. They frequently do not report all of the ingredients either. For example, the have a mascara called Bioelements listed as the most safe. But they (the EWG) lists only the active ingredients. When I called Bioelements and asked if there was anything else in that mascara, they sent me an email with about 20 other ingredients that were chemicals and were not listed by EWG. Also, EWG considers mica, iron oxide, and titanium dioxide (which are in just about every makeup product) to be safe. These are not safe. Iron oxide is rust. Titanium dioxide increases free radical damage. So Dr. Mercola, I do not think you should send people to EWG. Instead, people should ask the companies for every ingredient in a product (or read the label) and determine whether they believe these ingredients are safe. I will no longer use EWG to do my research for me.

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

Propylene glycol is used in antifreeze and when you check the bottle -you will see warning on it!
Anything what is from mineral oil sits on top of your skin and secondly is mimicking fake hormons-and with plastic bottles we have more than enough-just check the labels and Dr. Mercola site for references!

re: Not All Natural Beauty Products Are Natural

Watch me get slammed with negative points for this...but why do we need cosmetics? What's wrong with a freshly-scrubbed look? When you look at me, what you see is what you get. My face does not get applied in the morning or washed off before bed. I use no "beauty" products (too late for that anyway!) and my soap is a pure, handmade product crafted by friends locally.

I know, I know...I worked with teens for most of my life and the girls love to get all tarted up. If funny, coz I am Indian and people in India (at least some people there) have been been practicing Homeopathy and Ayurveda since the Vedic ages.
Its sad how marketing has lead people there to use more and more synthetic products and think thats better.

I use a lot of Himalaya Herbal products- right from their toothpaste to their facewash and facewash cream, shampoo, conditioner, face cream, night cream, body lotion etc. ..
They also have a line of baby care, pet care, pure herbs, womens health, men's health and Therapeutic products.

Until recently it was not available in the US, and I always had to ask people coming from india to get me stuff :)

It is more expensive buying it online here as it is packaged differently. There are a few websites where you can buy it cheaper and they ship it from India.

Either ways here is the himalaya herbal website:

http://www.himalayaherbals.com/index.htm

I have also used Biotique (papaya scrub and Eyeliner) and Lotus Herbals (Shampoo and Conditioner, Sun screen and detan lotion-i'm indian- i dont think i need to tan anymore- ha ha)

I love the lotus facewash ( with jojoba) I prefer that over the himalaya herbal face wash THOUGH the himalaya herbal face wash cream is amazing.

here are the other websites-
Biotique:
http://www.biotique.com/home.jsp

Lotus:
http://www.lotusherbals.com/

If you need any information regarding any of the produts you can mail me at charrismo@yahoo.com
i just really like the stuff and want to share it

Karishma
