It is a great example of just what e-mail can be if utilized well.

That said, I must also admit that e-mail has become a new kind of super-bug. Once my in-box passed 800, I qualified for a free course on e-mail management through my employer. The instructor appeared to have Ferengi blood, but this seemed to add the creative edge needed to come up with the necessary passive aggressive strategies.

In the spirit of “The Blog” I offer a few of his tips:

Have more than one e-mail account. This allows you to set up collection tanks for different kinds of e-mail such as one for Important People, one for forms on the Internet (which can launch serious spam), one for bills etc.. If you totally get killed by spam, you can dump the entire account.

Use the rules function to collect e-mail from anticipated sources such as people you really don’t want to be bothered by, family interruptions if at work, or simply newsletters you want to read a week at a time or when on a break.

Turn the alert bell off and only read your e-mail first thing in the morning or at a predetermined time.

In addition to this, seriously revisit filing 101. Who knew filing and typing would be so important in the New Age?

re: How to Radically Reduce Time You Spend on Email

This is exactly the strategy I adopted when I was finishing my
dissertation and needed large periods of uninterrupted time and to
remove distractions. It worked! I only checked my email
twice a day, morning and evening, and furthermore, limited myself to 30
minutes for email per day. I'm finding myself returning to that
strategy as I'm having trouble focusing on work these days.

Another interesting note, I recently heard of a study referenced in
"Delicious Living" magazine, that IQs drop when people live in an
environment of constant electronic connectivity (not only email, but
cell phones, instant messaging, etc.) Something to think about!
I do need a lot of B12 to repair nervous system damage - preferably from a natural rather than a synthetic source - so this is definitely a factor in deciding what to eat.

Health and wellness to you all.

re: How to Radically Reduce Time You Spend on Email

After reading a few more posts I am bit surprised, I guess since I did not expect to see rude comments here. But I balance that with the more courteous & thoughtful comments I read. The rude comment that refers to "posting unsubstantiated, unsupported vegan pseudodietbabble & their misguided, prissy value judgements" appears to be written by a very angry person who is hanging onto some past issues. My posting did not babble, did not pass judgement on anyone, & so far no one has been specific about what was "unsubstantiated". The comment of "prissy value judgements" is . . . well, pretty obvious from reading my post & that comment how ridiculous it is to say that. To the person who wrote that ugly post - I hope you can find it in your heart to treat each person as an individual & not rage at people & throw them all in a terrible stereotype you have built up. I was simply trying to let Katy know about other choices that work. I try to do a good deed for people every day, & if I get attacked for doing so, then so be it. But I would hope that people would use facts & that they would choose to speak their views with kindness, as many did. It was by being open minded that I found the health benefits of the vegan diet. I don't agree with everything I read on Mercola's website, but I read it faithfully since it regularly has wonderful articles that I don't see elsewhere. I have studied & learned too much to go back to eating what I know to be very unhealthy. I also choose to talk with those about what I have learned - so I expose people to good information, & in the process I learn more from others. So although I may not agree with something someone may say, there can be many pearls of wisdom in other things they may say. My thanks to those who chose to try to help me learn things in a positive spirit. I am far from being eaten yet. I have done a lot of investigation into the nutrition content of foods - meaning I have downloaded nutrition data from the government website on foods/nutrition. I put this data into an excel spreadsheet & compared the vitamins & minerals. I have also downloaded software that calculates & graphs the nutrient content of foods & done my own comparisons. The nutrition of a diet in unprocessed plant foods (veges, beans, fruit, nuts and seeds, cooked or raw) far exceeds a diet with meat & dairy. Also, a meat and dairy diet contains many things that hurt our health. When I switched my diet I went from 208lbs to 158lbs in about 4 months, and my cholesterol dropped from 247 to 143. Also, WD mentioned that I said something incorrect. Please be specific as I don't know what I said that may be incorrect & appreciate the education. I also appreciate the book recommendations since I try to be open minded and keep learning. If anyone feels their diet is the best for them then by all means continue. I never would have believed I would ever be vegan, but now I wouldn't want anything else. As I continue to learn more I remain convinced it is the healthiest by far. I have yet to see anyone here show me anything to the contrary. Hope you didn't chip your teeth! :)

re: How to Radically Reduce Time You Spend on Email

N.
