In today's video, I'll be sharing an interesting story with you about my own family. A few weeks ago, I went to a birthday party for my niece. I hadn't seen my family for a while, and it was a nice opportunity to get together with them

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Dr Mercola! Have you seen a sudden surge in the number of healthcare portals and websites worldwide ? Wanted to share a lot about the latest trends in the online health portals and the online resources.

A new thing that I have been seeing is that all the health portals are providing yellow pages directory as well. Everyone lists down thousands of doctors and hospitals and most of the data records are either incomplete or wrong. What’s the use for such data when anyone can get it from online yellow pages within seconds. The idea is to make use of the data and then provide services to the patients like fixing appointments or getting discounts. The pull of a portal is not because the portal has a few hundred thousand doctors listed. The strength is in providing me only 10 doctors in my city but they should be good and recommendable doctors.

Another aspect which is commonly seen is the Symptom tracker. The health websites are linked to sites like Harvard medical school or Mayo Clinic. Again, I feel it is useless after trying atleast 5 such sites. The point is that I get even more confused when these symptom trackers throw up 5-10 possible causes of my problem. I tried sore throat and fever. The result generated included all diseases that can cause sore throat including Throat Cancer. Can you imagine !! I come for a simple thing like sore throat and I get Throat Cancer as the cause. Never to visit such sites again. Best is to either call or have live chat with a doctor. If not, atleast send an email and get a response from a real doctor and not through an automated tool.

Third item which is slightly troublesome is the static content. I see sites with content from all over the world on it. Why so much of effort when I can google out the best content from parent sites or I can go to sites like wikipedia for authentic content.

The trend that is missing is the concept of Wellness and Health, Personalization and Real time Medical Advice. Community Feeling. I have listed do

I have to agree that for the most part it has been a good thing. My grandma (on my dad's side) lived until she was 84, without ever spending time in the hospital (besides having my uncle, who was breech, she had a total of 9 kids, of 1 out of 9 isn't bad) until the day she died. She rarely ever went to a doctor, even when we(her and I) were sick with the flu for a month, when I was little, and she got over it before I did! I have a mentally disabled uncle that lives with my dad, that one of my aunts got hooked on Splenda (my dad takes an empty bag and puts sugar in it, lol, cheaper and probably better in the long run), that is in his late 60's and is in pretty decent health, despite lack of taking care of himself.
My mothers side of the family, with the exception of my mother, is different, they all must have the latest and greatest that big pharmaceutica has to offer. My grandmother on that side is on god knows how many meds for this and that, and she is in her late 60's also and is in worse health than my dad's mother was and looks older than my 84 year old grandmother did too.
As for me, I have 4 children, only one is immunized, because of lack of self education on the matter. My little brother is autistic(I think that is what switched my mother from her families typical medical outlook), and I am deathly scared of the same for my children. I do everything in my power to keep from going to the doctor with them, because every doctor I try, has tried to push vaccines on them, even when I state my research and fears.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Thank you Mercola, I was beginning to take it personally, LOL, but seriously it is truly sad when your own family doesn't follow the healthy lifestyle and plans, and believe the information we give them. Society/aka the pharmaceutical industries and their well put together enticing and magnetic commercials really have a hold on people. THAT is truly the greatest tragedy of our day, that people would depend on drugs for their health, as if their conditions showed up due to a lack of the drug needed to treat it.
thanks again Mercola for educationg the puble, you are changing the world with what you do, and I personally thank you.
Dr Anna

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

It amazes me that you promote eating animal flesh. Most animal flesh, as you know is highly toxic to the human body. We are not meant to eat flesh. Our bodies are not built to digest it, as I am sure you know. Thank you! I know now that I'm not alone!

It really strikes a chord with me as I also run into a brick wall every time I try to inform anyone in my family about the dangers of pasteurized milk, unfermented soy, grains, sugar, splenda, amalgams, pharmaceutical drugs... and the virtues of sunlight, vitamin D, fish oils, coconut oil, lacto-fermented veggies, etc. Both my sisters and mom continue to have yearly mammograms despite the pain and my insistence of their dangers. My sister continued to feed her son soy milk for years despite all the articles I gave her regarding the dangers. It made me feel so defeated!

Over the past 5 years or so both my parents had cancer. I'm sure their diet had a lot to do with it and I tried to encourage them to make healthier choices and seek out alternative therapies but to no avail. I felt totally helpless! Thank God both of them recovered but they continue to eat what I would consider an unhealthy diet (lots of refined grains, starches, sugar, splenda, trans fats, processed snacks and meats).

To this day they still think I'M the one whose being duped by some devious 'health gurus' ; they refuse to believe that what the 'media' preaches to us could possibly be wrong; or that big pharma has more interest in making a profit than in improving one's health.

In the end it is their choice; I've decided to remain silent unless they ask.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Lack of family and community support is especially a big issue diseases and conditions like lupus and fibromyalgia where symptoms can come and go suddenly and the affected person "looks" healthy. I have been struggling with this for years. I have lupus and I think one of the most difficult things is feeling like people think I'm lazy or faking illness because one day I am seemingly fine and the next day I can't get out of the bed. The fact is there isn't really a day that goes by that I don't deal with pain and fatigue. You just learn to do it but it is a lot easier when you have the support and encouragement of family, friends, and co-workers! I take many supplements, eat a restricted diet, and use a combination of western and eastern medicine with the support of a great rheumatologist. I don't always get the same support from my family and friends.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Wow, even Dr. Mercola has issues like this with his own family.

I experience the same thing. My husbands family just doesn't get it, they drink diet soda, use Nutrasweet (Equal), Splenda, etc.(even the kids drink diet soda!) My niece and my brother are the only ones in my family that listen.

I was at a family picnic and there was Crystal Light on the table and my brother-in-law overheard me say that I don't drink that and he asked why. I said because it has artificial sweetener and he asked what was wrong with that and I just said it's a neurotoxin and he just laughed.

I feel sorry for people that are so ignorant when it comes to their health. They go to their conventional doctors and think they know it all.

It's very frustrating because I want to see my family healthy as they grow older.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

While YOU may be unable to get your family to take notice of what you have to say, this does not mean that the person concerned will not accept the same information, only from a different source. If, for example, you were to ask your mother: someone they are used to receiving advice from all their lives, to tell them, it just may sink in. Tell your mother what you saw, and just how bad it is for their grand daughter, but that you are powerless in the matter, whereas she may not be. Or work on their spouse/partner: they may realise that it is just not worth the aggravation/nagging which is likely to continue, until they respond appropriately. I am uninformed as to your family's structure, and the interpersonal relationships and psychology of the people concerned. It is apparent to me that you have an extensive knowledge of medicine, nutrition, and supplements, but no-one can be an expert on everything, and I suggest that you seek the opinions of people who are qualified to provide such advice, and not give up so easily, where family are concerned. If you can't get in through the front door, try the back, then the windows. There may well be a way in, somewhere.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Those who are too hard-hearted to listen to advice beneficial to them do not deserve good health. Those who are open enough to listen and atleast try your suggestions are the ones that deserve good health. Darwin also says that the ignorant former ones will eventually die out while the knowlegdable latter ones will be able to have more ofspring and pass their good habits and knowlegde on to them (though it may take a while, it will eventually happen, possibly in a couple generations judging by the fact that this is the first generation since colonial times that will live shorter average lives than the previous ones).

What can you do to help the hard-hearted ones? Just be a friend and don't try to force advice upon them but have them know that you are always willing to help the and give them advice. Another thing, children are much more acceptive of different, and possibly more truthful, paradigms; so mind the children.

re: Do Your Family Members Not Believe You About Health?

Why not pay your relatives to eat well? I had a chat
last week with a neighbor who works for our county WIC (women and infant
children) program to encourage nursing by mothers. She still has a hard time
convincing mothers to do breastfeeding for various reasons though the payoff
would likely be fantastic in avoided health care costs through the life of the
infants, The baby formula sellers also have a say with the WIC program about feeding
for the babies, and many mothers choose the formula option for convenience or
other reasons. For example a mother who got a nursing bib at a drug store was
sent a formula feeding kit by a company who had gotten her name and address
from the drug store! I suggested paying the mothers to nurse and buy a good
diet or maybe hire wetnurses for those who can’t. How much would they need to
be paid to make it worth their while?
Hundreds of dollars? maybe not.
Several thousand? possibly! We figured about a $5,000-$10,000 payoff
would likely get most mothers to nurse and would probably be more than worth it
in terms of the future health and happiness of the child. These amounts also
are not huge in terms of what people in government spend on things. It may
sound ridiculous to some but getting paid is a very strong motivating factor
and can make people think. People can be ornery but they could choose or not to
enter a contract and accept the money. Any arguments against this approach?
