My God, I wish I knew this information when my children were babies 18 and 15 years ago. At that time, "formula was better than breastmilk" and my son, 15 was allergic to regular formula so it was soy for him. Poor kids. Boy, if I could go back in time! :)

Re: Soy-based infant formulas. See "Charlie's Story" on the Weston A. Price Foundation site. In references was how soy became high in fluorides, Prevention magazine, Feb. 1972: "How Airborne Fluorides Can Poison Food". Then reported this fact in the Journal of Dental Research, Special Issue, Worldwide Symposium on Fluorides, Feb. 1990, Pages 529-538, by Drs. Pendrys and Stamm. They noted soy-based infant formulas were as high as 7.34 ppm, and that the ADA met with manufacturers and told them they had to lower the fluorides levels. But, it was too late for my son, and I bet many others. The U.S. Govt. book: Toxicological Profile for Fluorides, Hydrogen Fluoride, and Fluorine, 1993, note nutrition and calcium in particular are vital to stop the toxic effects of fluorides, and calcium gluconate is used as antidote for fluoride poisoning. See pages 112, 125 (neurotoxicity) and 128.

I am a mom that feeds her baby formula. I had a c-section and could not even hold him for a day so I was not able to breastfeed right away. I was able to a few days later and continued for 2 weeks. I was not producing anymore that 2 oz a day and he needed to eat. So from the beginning he got both and now just formula. I tried everything to get my milk to come in and nothing worked for me. I am glad there is an option & I hate having to always feel bad or defend myself because I don't breastfeed. I beat myself up aboout it so I really get stressed out to hear it from others.
Anyway I am giving him Carnation Good Start which is the formula Dr. Mercola reccommends. They are Nestle...can I catch a break?

At what age can I start him on raw milk?

It realy bugs me to see people spouting off about somthing they know nothing about. In cluding the good doctor.

Have any of you ever been to the Philippines? No
I have a Filipino wife and children. I will tell you all of these studies are flawed. They assume the mother is healthy and eating a somewhat balanced diet. That is not true in the Philippines. 80 -90% of the mothers are malnurished. Most are 5ft or under and 80 to 90 lbs. The vast majority cannot breast feed after 5 months. There is no milk. And don't give me this crud all mothers have milk. I have years of expeirence with mothers with no milk. So what should the mothers do? Let their children die, or give them formula? My observations of filipino children are that are on formula from 1 month on are double the size of breast feed. Not sickly. Smarter.
Its not a perfect world. Yes the drug companies are criminals. But breastfeeding is not always better. And in the Philippines its not always an option.

In a small way there is a need for some of the infant formulas...I know there probably isn't a huge demand but I know that some medical conditions prevent women from breastfeeding. My grandmother had breast cancer and didn't realize it until she noticed that her suckling child, my father, was consuming green milk. As a whole, breast milk is a lot more nourishing than any formula but may not be an option for some women. I know my grandmother lived in Amish country so she was probably able to get raw milk and good alternatives to powdered milk. I'll have to ask her sometime:)

Hi. Did you all know that there is more nutrition offered in pet food formulas than in baby formula? I was an infant care specialist as a preschool teacher and those bottle fed babies had significantly more allergies, asthma, as well as more infections of all types.
However, it did not seem to be a factor in causing developemental delays that were detectable.
Once again it seems that the FDA is not FOR OUR PROTECTION, but for the profit of the business world. Thanks for the info. Norma J

So If a baby was given soy formula 18 years ago, what can be done now to reverse the effects?? What can/could be done to reverse the over manganese injestion? Theresa

This information is really good. I would really like to know what people who have fed their children soy formula should do. Do we just sit back and see if it had an affect on our kids or can we be proactive and undo the damage that has been done. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

breastfeeding is the best way to feed babies if you can, and breastfeeding is the best way for filipino mothers to feed their babies, and the cheapest way for women in the third world countries same as everyone else. formula is not superior to breast milk

Breastfeeding saved my health, among other things. I lost 65 lbs (both pregnancy and 45lbs I had before). It helped my body handle insulin better which got rid of my hypothryodism. Those things are not even as important as the bond I have with my 2 children and the amazing way my mothering has been improved by it. When I was having troubling breastfeeding my daughter in the beginning and she used a bottle, it was a totally different experience for me. I felt like she was somebody else's child! Thank goodness I worked through my troubles with breastfeeding and did it until she was 2 1/2 yrs. My son is now almost 18 months and I plan on doing it as long as mututally desired. They are both well ahead of their peers intellectually and physically. It is very sad formula companies work to take these things away from women and they do not even know what they are missing. It seems like another form of discrimination against women, making them feel their own bodies are inadequate once again.

My first son didn't want to breastfeed after 7 months so I put him on soy milk. What a mistake!!! He didn't gain weight and didn't walk until 15 months. This was 10 years ago just before I joined Dr. Mercola's email list. I read how bad soy was and switched him to rice milk (wish I knew about raw milk then) which wasn't enough nutrition either. I breastfed my second son until he was 2 1/2 years old. He's 7 now and recently had his IQ tested to determine if he should go into a gifted program. His score was 121 which is a superior score. 130 is gifted. I associate his intelligence with giving him his omega 3's and breastfeeding.

This is sad news, but has been an issue for many years. In the 1970's, when I was breastfeeding my children, breastfeeding wasn't popular except with other granola moms. We were all members of La Leche League and met at one another's homes to discuss how to get more moms to provide this unique and life giving gift to their children. Most of us breastfed our children to at least two years of age. I personally let my youngest breastfeed until he was four. He is now a successful and healthy adult with a family of his own.

Nestle was and is one of the most dangerous companies in discouraging this beautiful, natural act. Don't give up working to win people over to the natural way. It is, demonstrably, the very best.

Companies like Nestle need to be stopped, if enough people boycott them, they will at some stage have to take notice. I for one do not purchase anything even remotely linked to nestle.

Midwives, midwives, midwives. There is no more important intermediary between the pushers of formula and mothers, esp in low income areas and developing countries. These women work hard and risk alot to keep birth and motherhood a sacred thing that is not to be corrupted by mainstream commericalism or medicine. I can't stress their importance enough!
