With my first child, I refused to get a prescription at the hospital. Once home from the hospital, I decided I needed the Vicodin that was offered, so I called my OB and got the Vicodin. I was breastfeeding, and was not told about what side effects it could have on my son.
I took one, and fed my son a couple hours later. That was the first time my son slept through the night, and I was terrified, I could not wake him up. I called my dad (the closest person I could get a hold of) and my dad rushed over. My dad and I took turns with my son for the night, feeding him water. He was breathing fine, but just could not wake him up. I credit my dad for possibly saving my son's life, and my sanity.
As for opiates, I will never take them again while breastfeeding. BEWARE!

This is such a tragedy. No matter how much we investigate things beforehand, situations arise where we must put our trust in others. I was going to have a natural childbirth (no drugs) and wound up having to have a C-section. Thank goodness those who cared for me during and afterwards used meds that did not hurt me or the baby. I could just as easily have been a victim.

Julejule, if you say "natural selection" one more time...it is such an ugly thing to think you are better or more valuable than anyone else because you have the wisdom to research and others may not have gotten there yet. I have compassion on those who educate themselves when there is a tragedy and those who do not have that wisdom that comes with maturity in life yet. It IS possible to feel for someone who has loss for any reason. What is more important, to know everything or to have a kind heart?

It's nice to see such passionate discussion on a topic of such paramount importance. PPARGammaGirl, unfortunately, breastfeeding in America is not as popular as you might think it is or as it should be. If my tone is pompous, I apologize. About 30 years ago a phenomenal M.D. by the name of Robert S. Mendelsohn wrote a book called "Confessions of a Medical Heretic". Have a look through that book and then come back and speak about "faith" and "trust" and "partnerships". And I quote,
"Modern Medicine can't survive without our faith because Modern Medicine is neither an art or a science. It's a religion." Good thing I'm agnostic.
Another book written by Dr. Mendelsohn, "How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor", is one more that will minimize both your "faith" and your "trust" in the religion of Modern Medicine. We should be using the knowledge we have gained over the past 100 years to stay true to nature, not beat it with a caduceus.
One last thing, there's a Romanian saying "Bine cu sila, nu se face"- basically, you can't force benevolence.
You can't care about someone's situation more than they do themselves. If they want to do what's best for their own health, they must be motivated enough to glean and hunt the information down on their own. Dr. Mendelsohn summarizes nicely when he says, "When you fear something, you avoid it. You ignore it. You shy away from it. You pretend it doesn't exist. You let someone else worry about it. This is how the doctor takes over. We let him. We say: I don't want anything to do with this, my body and it's problems, doc. You take care of it doc. Do what you have to do. So the doctor does." This is how the majority of Americans think. And that is why Dr. Mercola and others like him are truly our lifesavers by encouraging us to think for ourselves and to not swim with the current.

Just imagine how guilty this poor mom who lost her baby must be feeling! I went to nursing school about thirty years ago, had two cesaereans when I had my babies. That is a whole other story; I had pain meds but breast-fed both my kids. Luckily no harm came to them- even after going to nursing school, I had no idea that they might have been harmed- I was also in a lot of pain. I knew I had to get off the meds as fast as I could and did. I went to La Leche League- still got a lot of negative response about breast feeding from my mother-in-law, my doctor and my friends. I stuck with it and luckily my kids are great. If I had it to do now with what I know, I sure would have gone a different route. Linda

Isn't this exacty the attitude which causes people to take Tylenol while breastfeeding, or to have their child injected with neurotoxic vaccines, risking autism and a host of other illnesses and disorders?

Breastfeeding children also tend to have higher IQs than non-breastfed children. I breastfed my youngest son for 2 1/2 years and his IQ was tested recently at age 7 and his IQ is 121 (superior).

This case is another good argument for home birth. I was given an episiotomy in the hospital (after requesting none) for my smallest baby. It bothered me for 8 months or more (though I took no pain medication). But at home, with a competent midwife who knew how to support the perineum, and delivering in a squatting position, I delivered my largest baby, over 9 pounds, without any tear. I am a loyal reader and enjoy your postings but just had to join to put my two cents in on this one. My boyfriend is a very skilled and intelligent ob/gyn. I am his "granola" girlfriend and make sure he hears the latest on mercola.com. However, women planning to have a baby should know that it is not uncommon for him to receive an emergency patient that he does not know from a midwife, and if he did not sacrifice almost all of his personal time for patients in need, I don't know what would happen to these women. It is wise to be prepared. Yes having a baby is natural, but remember in the old days lots of women didn't survive it.

What is reccomended for mothers who need C-sections? Should the mom pump while taking the pain killers and bottle feed the baby? It's scarry to think what I've given to my babies through breastmilk!

There is no one specific person, company or thing to blame. It is a tangled web of bad tradition, fear, profit and comsumer conditioning.
For the average non-holistic American, alternatives to dr.s and drugs seem like medievil quackery or some hippie trying to make a buck. They have been conditioned by tradition, schools and by standard medicine that asking questions and researching for yourself is offensive to them and a risk to your health. Most doctors are not evil, demented, monstors out to kill you so they can retire rich. They are good people helping oithers the only way they know how. Yes they should investigate more and learn to think outside of the box. But in all reality there is no fully safe, fullproof, perfect health care system/method out there. They all have risks and they all can cause damage.
As my midwife quotes "Birth is as safe as life gets." Life is dangerous and you cannot protect yourself from everything. Besides this was one baby among how many thousands whose breastfeeding mother took tylenol-3. This wierd gene could have caused this to happened with herbal treatment also.

My heart goes out to this woman. As someone who used to believe in a "pill for every ill" I cannot judge her. It wasn't until I had a mystery illness three years ago and went from doctor to doctor with very bad results that I turned to alternative methods. When I had my children, I did all sorts of things that I now know I shouldn't but hey, my doctor said it was fine, so I believed him. I'm certain that I caused a miscarriage my taking a topical steroid that he said was "just fine". Talk about finding out the hard way.

However, blaming this woman and calling her an idiot, does nothing to further the "cause" so to speak. It makes most people discount the message and tune out, IMO.

My doctor tried to give me codeine for a chronic cough I developed after giving birth that was causing me abdominal pain. I looked it up and it said specifically not to give codeine to breast feeding mothers. I was baffled he had done that, my baby was only 13 days old at the time! I threw it away, and now I'm really glad I did! Mainstream medicine really angers me sometimes!

This is a very sad story. We don't know the woman at all, though, we cannot judge her, whatever the appearances might seem to be.
But for us breastfeeding mothers dr. Mercola's comment in the end of the article, that breastfeeding is incredibly good for the baby and the mother, is an optimistic word of encouragement. And a good reminder to be careful at what drugs we ingest while nursing...

I don't mean to sound cruel here, but no one forced this stupid woman to take the Tylenol 3. I had natural childbirth, an episiotomy, and yes, it really hurt! Why can't we look at the person who's fault it really was; the mother. If someone doesn't know that they should not take opiates while breastfeeding, can you imagine what she did while she was pregnant?? Hello??? Anna Nicole Smith?!
