So-called 'dissidents can be political, religious, pro democratic and so on. The Chinese Communist gov't is very unstable and could collapse at any moment. Chairman Mao and his cohorts have murdered 80 million Chinese citizens since the communist gov't took over in 1949. I think it's a big mistake to invest in that evil regime.

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker

As I have always been convinced, matters not what your politics are all about, only a dollar really matters. You know a track record that includes deals with Nazi Germany, prior to WWII, and all the other under the table deals with the Villians of the world. So much for Capitalism, no make that "Greed."

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker
Chinese pigs are fed waste water to increase their weight prior to slaughter. Their cows are so full of antibiotics it is impossible to make yogurt from their milk.

The Bush Administration is trying to pass legislation to remove country of origin information from food products. If he succeeds, we will never know where our food is coming from.

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker

I don't like it either that America is not price competitive with China, but who's fault is that? Not China's. Should I be forced to pay more for the same goods and have less money for other things? Have you considered the destructive effects a protectionist trade policy would have on our own economy?

Yes, the Trade Deficit is terribly high at $400 billion, but the National Debt is $9 trillion! So before you blame China and force Americans to spend more money, why not beat up Washington for leading us into bankruptcy. The interest on the debt is the third largest budget category; and, in an odd way, the trade deficit gives foreign countries the dollars to service that debt.

Our own government is a far, far bigger problem than China and for many more reasons than just this issue. "It's the government, stupid!" would be a good campaign slogan.

Douglas Smith
Tennessee

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker

The last time I EVER walked into a Walmart (and swore never to return), there was a strong smell of chlorine (the first poison gas that was used for chemical warfare in WWI) right at the entrance. Horizon is in Boulder, County, Colorado, a place where citizens have famously struggled to do something about the poor quality of US foods (e.g. Celestial Seasonings is founded there too). Obviously, Horizon has to operate "like a factory" to produce so much milk to market--one can't have milk maids chasing cows around the fields. But if they are not using hormones, antibiotics and pesticides like much of the milk industry does, I want to drink that milk. And I can't buy it anywhere else in smalltown PA but the local Wal-Mart. We should protect the distinction 'organic' however, as much as possible. Another point: The USA, not China, is genetically modifying crops. So whose 'organic' is less reliable? Glass houses all around. It is one world and our shopping at Wal-Mart should be informed and critical but not necessarily boycott-minded and hostile to the point of destructive.

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker

I went to Wal-Mart years ago, and shopped for my family. After a while, I noticed nothing I bought there lasted more than six months, and it was all cheap crap.

I have better things to do than to buy cheap stuff that needs to be replaced all the time.

I went back with a friend who was looking for a certain camera. They didn't have it, but tried to switch him to buy a demonstrator at what would be full retail anywhere else locally.

The place was crowded, and rather dingy.

They could have done so much better, but they chose to be cheap in this country. I read they had or have a high end store (s) in other countries, but don't offer quality here, so I'm off them for life, or until they change their tune.

re: Wal-Mart Gets Stronger While America Gets Weaker

In response to the comment about food being imported into the U.S. from China. I live in China and have no choice but to eat the food raised and grown here.
