Hens that lay omega-3 eggs are fed flax
seeds, which contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The hen metabolizes
the ALA into EPA and DHA in a way similar to humans and other mammals,
but utilizing different enzymes, and at a generally different
efficiency.

As a rule of thumb, figure about 75 mg of DHA per every 225 mg of omega-3 in an egg.

re: Egg Producers Deceive Consumers With Bogus Omega-3 Claims

I don't think the Amish ever eat fish. Yet they have virtually no mental illness. So I wonder, is fish oil really that important? I don't want my eggs from chickens that are fed fish because of the risk of mercury contamination in the eggs. I am very allergic to fish and sea salt and have to get all my omega 3's from other sources, which is what the Amish do.

re: Egg Producers Deceive Consumers With Bogus Omega-3 Claims

Dr. Mercola,
Feeding fish to chickens is not part of a natural ecology. I was following Dr. Barbara Luke's advice to get a lot of animal protein -- her theory is that we are seeing an epidemic of premature babies (especially among multiples) because they are literally starving in there and trigger labor early because they figure their chances at nutrition will be better on the outside, so to speak!

I used those designer eggs some, and bought local pastured eggs when I could. I also ate red meat and other high-protein foods, too. I gained 70 pounds (which I lost pretty quickly!) and delivered two very healthy, 6-pound twin girls 2 days before my due date. If I had followed the high-grains, etc. diet set forth in books like "What to Expect When You're Expecting," I don't think I would have done as well.

Now we are able to get our eggs fresh and my girls love shakes a la the Mercola recipe -- we do raw milk, flax oil, an some eggs, and a banana and some probiotics. I am far less concerned about their getting sick from eggs or milk from a farm I am familiar with than I am from eating lots of empty carbs, etc. They have been so healthy and a large part of that I attribute to being willing to break away from the SAD for pregnant moms/infants/toddlers and to focus on high-quality fats and proteins.

If you are interested in the pregnancy resources I found helpful regarding nutrition, e-mail me: anderson3424@yahoo.com. Mostly Weston A. Price Foundation readings, and Nina Planck's articles were very helpful (and of course this site, especially for vaccination information!).

Best,

Laura

re: Egg Producers Deceive Consumers With Bogus Omega-3 Claims

Thanks for the tip. I was someone who believed this junk.

re: Egg Producers Deceive Consumers With Bogus Omega-3 Claims

Maybe they don't know the difference between a hen egg, and a chicken egg. Who, exactly, are the folks at CSPI? The article referenced does not have an author and the article's site has no information onsite about the organization. There is an address and a non-toll free number. That doesn't encourage me to find out about the organization. What are their credentials? Where is the backing for their claims? They are going after the egg producers but their premise is that the FDA says only two kinds of omega 3 fats are good for you. Show me the studies. The FDA says all kinds of things that are bogus.
