Companies who test their own products have an automatic conflict of interest. I'd feel more comfortable if supplements were submitted to an independent lab for testing. Incidentally, there are independent labs who test samples, but if you want the data you have to subscribe, i.e. pay. I checked out their website before the subscription clause went into effect and was surprised at how many branded samples were found to be contaminated with herbicides, pesticides, lead, etc.

2. How about enforcement? If the FDA enforces this the way the USDA inspects slaughterhouses and meat-packing plants, it will be a joke.

re: U.S. Issues New Standards For Dietary Supplements

While I realize there are some unscrupulous producers out there I hope the FDA does not go overboard and regulate the supplement industry out of business while allowing the pharmaceutical companies free reign with their products.

Mary

re: U.S. Issues New Standards For Dietary Supplements

Companies can petition to be exempted from having to test 100 percent of their ingredients. Proven safe like Vioxx, Baycol, Rezulin, Avandia....I can keep going. What exactly is their definition of safe?
