This is Dr. Mercola, and today, I've got a little exercise tip for you, something that I've learned in the last few months that I really thought I should share with you. You see, I've been exercising since 1968, when I first read Dr. Cooper's book

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

Most people can "afford" cable but not a gym membership, ha! Check with your cable provider about what your cable can do for you. My cable provider, Insight, has a free health section with a wide variety of workouts that rotate every 30 days or so. Its a great was to work out at home when you can't "afford" a gym membership!

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

I am wondering if just doing pushups would give you the same aerobic workout without having to buy anything. I realize that different arm muscles are being used to pull you up. Just another note that I got from Dr. Wallach: if you are not supplementing with enough of the essential minerals (84 of them, all ionic and tasty in kiwi strawberry flavor) then your exercise will be sweating away your minerals and creating a deficiency that will bring you disease.

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

Update on Amazon availability. Amazon is now selling this item directly at $14.99. Qualifies for free shipping if your total purchase through Amazon ( directly , not vendors) amounts to $25. So the savings can add up.

As Mercola has updated, Amazon vendor Fitness Giant jacked their prices up from $15 to $32 shortly after his referral.
TRY ANOTHER BAR

I was planing to buy the GoFit Chin Up Bar until I learned about a problem, the spinning or rotating of the bar is a common problem, after some research I found TKO Doorway Pull up bar which designed to solve the spinning bar problem. The ends are hexagonal shaped and they fit into the brackets in a way that they can't spin.

I got it from eBay for 12.99$
it's safer and cheaper and got same quality.
just wanted to share with you.

Palms facing away (pronated - pull-up) weakens the arm involvement by making the forearm less mechanically advantageous and minimizes bicep muscle involvement.

Arthur Jones invented a pull-over machine that places resistance directly on the upper arm, therefore taking the weak link out of the exercise. He called it the "upper body squat" because it used the largest muscles of the torso - lats and pecs. After doing a set of pull-overs and switching immediatly to pull-downs really maximizes the muscle involvement.

For women who can't do a chin-up, use a chair and your legs to lift yourself above the bar and just lower yourself with the arms (often called a negative rep). Doing a few of these regularly and you will soon be able to do a full chin.

Don't worry about getting big bulky arms - not many of the US women's dragon boat team have them and some can do 20 chin-ups.

Take care.

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

Much appreciated...
Hi All, Thanks for sharing this with us
Dr. M!

I'd like to share something with those
who want to use a chinning bar to create strength. Reps will work but
you may overtrain and pull muscles in your back, wrists (see Suzan's
comment|) and will ultimately limit your strength to your body
weight. You are capable of MUCH MORE. Here's my suggestion: move your
body into the final position by getting up on a chair for example.
Lifting your feet off the chair, hold that position for 5 seconds.
NEXT WEEK add 10 pounds (or 5-10% of your total weight=body+extra)
via a belt for example. When you fail to add 5-10% to your total
weight, HELD FOR 5 SECS, ADD 2 days to your RECOVERY time, i.e. 9
days, 11 days, etc between "workouts". Be aware that door
jams aren't built for serious weight training, I always recommend the
GYM. Avoid overtraining, straining and achieve MAXIMUM, SAFE, GAINS.
About 100,000 people train this way and its called Static
Contraction. Train LESS, gain MORE. You might find OLD INJURIES HEAL
if you avoid reps- I did!

All The Best!

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

Dr. M,

Bodyweight exercises are extremely effective (just ask a gorilla). As well, people who use them are less likely to suffer from weight lifting induced injuries. Of all the many people espousing bodyweight exercises I have come across, far and away the best is a guy called Ross Enamait. I highly recommend having a look at his website rosstraining.com. Have a peek at his videos and you'll really get an understanding for what I mean.

re: Simple Inexpensive Exercise Tip

Doing one set makes the
next set easier. I know someone who used to be a
ballerina (so she's hot) and she tells me that I
should push myself one step further no matter how
good I think I'm doing.

So, Dr. M, maybe next time we'll see you doing
some berserk kung fu exercises like one armed chin
ups with weights tied to your ankles. ; )

Also-I can get rubberized material for grips or use tape etc. Less is more is my philosophy--and yes--that is very uncool of the 120% increase in price by the vendor. I am certain this can be made by those so inclined for under $10. !!! I will report back!!!
OK--45 min. later--I settled with 1.5 in wood dowell--very comfortable for my hands. Two floor flanges and 6 screws. Total= $16.52. Ok--it may not be Martha Stewart smart--yet--it works. I could not find a suitable substitute for the flange--but I am sure they are out there.
