For a long time I've been reading publications put out by the independent, non-profit, media organization called Adbusters. I'm not trying to promote them or anything, but I wanted to bring up something I realized by hearing about Adbuster's efforts to counter these million dollar marketing Goliaths. Adbusters has proposed ads to certain mainstream media outlets that truthfuly reveal the connection between fast food/sugary food and obesity. Many people don't realize the power that that BIG advertising can have which is why I think that the work this organization is doing is important. I started to think about the connection between BIG conglomerate media outlets, billion dollar marketing budgets and the huge industries that profit off things like Coke and McDonalds (etc.) Literally they are spending millions on ads which only seek to profit off us by getting us to buy unhealthy products that in turn have only been adding to our obesity and health woes - it's a no win situation for us, yet the few at the top make billions. I asked myself questions like "Gee, I wonder what the world would be like if these billions of dollars were spent on say, public health, education, or conservation." Of course Adbusters doesn't have a million dollars to spend on their socially responsible ads, they raised the money through public fundraising and member donations - just for the opportunity to run one ad. Little to my surprise, their ads (which you can see on their website: http://www.adbusters.org/memewars/ ) have been met with great resistance by media outlets who have refused to run the ads. I am not surprised that many of the social problems including poor health & obesity continue to get worse despite overwhelming scientific knowledge that these products are bad - especially when important information is continually supressed.

re: Those "Natural" Soft Drinks -- Are They Really?

Is Tropicana OK?

re: Those "Natural" Soft Drinks -- Are They Really?

One of my favorite scams is "Vitamin water" - they sell it at Walmart.

Google it on the web and see how many people are downright "addicted" to the stuff and convinced it's "healthier" than soda.

Marketing at it's very best.

The stuff is selling so well, Coke want's to buy them out.

re: Those "Natural" Soft Drinks -- Are They Really?

HFCS not only converts to triglycerides and fat in the body triggering obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardio vascular disease, but as the Wall Street Journal reported, on page one last year, Mexican bottled Coke, made with real cane sugar (which taste much better) out sells less expensive HFCS sweetened Coke, even with a higher price, in the USA.

HFCS REMAIN A SYNTHETIC AND CHEMICAL INGREDIENT OF HARMFUL HEALTH CONSEQUENCES CONSUMED AT ANY LEVEL.

there is no such thing a 'fructose' derived from a natural source, it's a made up name trying to pretend it's levulose, but really chemically refined from starch (corn, wheat, or beet).

re: Those "Natural" Soft Drinks -- Are They Really?

Brilliant, of course. Unless you have been on Mars, any subscriber to this web site should know that high fructose corn syrup is Uuuukkkccc!! disgusting, revolting, and UNHEALTHY as giggling Satan. Great to direct those of us to randomly comment to silly shoppers in line with us about labels to say the most intelligent and relevant thing right off the bat. However, shopping at Trader Joe's, while not perfect, does help to reduce the amount of hyped products one is inundated with at stores such as "WHOLE PAYCHECK" (you know who I mean) who I am stuck with shopping at once in a blue moon for RAW MILK.
