A 10-year study that compared organic and non-organic tomatoes found that the organic varieties contained more antioxidant flavonoids. At the market, you don't get the product placement bombardment that you get at grocery stores, who get paid to place stuff hanging on the metal shelves, between isles, at the checkout and so on.

Organic is better for you all around.

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

This is terrific. I am a nutrition student at a state university. Because we are land-grant and receive a ton of money from the USDA, the nutrition department is required to push the USDA agenda which includes eating accord to the food pyramid, and organic produce is no different than conventional.

Really.

Last year I did a project on how to eat fresh and organic on a budget and my professor said "the research shows that conventional produce is equivalent to organic, and there is absolutely no benefit to spending extra money on organic food." She further went on to say that because she also works for cooperative extension, most of her funding comes from the USDA and she is expected to follow their guidelines and also made me change my project to not mention "organic."

Really.

So it's great to have literature to state the obvious: food grown as nature intended is better than doped up, agribusiness crap.

With that said... large scale agribusiness organic (read: mass produced for the wide-market) really isn't much better than conventional. Fields are still crop dusted with organic-approved substances, and the crops don't get the personal attention they do with small-scale farming.

By far, locally produced food is the way to go. Small local farmers - even non-organic farms - are above and beyond better. I used to be "organic or nothing," but after meeting the local farmers I have come to learn they all practice sustainable agriculture. NONE of them use pesticides or herbicides, and most aren't certified. Now I am "local or nothing" because you don't need a logo from the USDA to grow good food. You just need to care and have a conscience.

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

For years I was the only one among my friends and acquaintances who ate organic. They would look at me like I was nuts. Now I have others who tell me how good organic food tastes compared to non-organic. I actually go to other homes and see organic foods.

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

Imagine that, real unprocessed food is better for human consumption?!

Will wonders never cease?!

;-)

Uncle Russ

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

Well it is about time science realized the truth of what people were telling them about locally grown organic produce. Because the soil is healthier the food can resist pests naturally.

Mary

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

"Regular" commercial produce has always tasted strange and lacked in natural sweetness and flavor. And back when I would buy commercial produce, I would eat only a little and end up throwing the rest away because it had gone bad.

With Local Organic produce - the flavors are richer, deeper and the wonderful flavor only make you want more veggies and fruits.

The public has no idea about how CHEATED they are with commercial fruits and veggies that lack flavor and taste - probably why Americans rarely eat produce anyway - NO taste!

re: 10-Year Study Concludes: Organic Really IS Better For You

Thank goodness. I am sooo sick of ignorant people saying that there is no proven benefit of eating organic. In my opinion the benefits are common sense and those denying it are just finding excuses not to make the change.
