As much as I would love to buy locally, it is imposible when there is snow on the ground for 4 or 5 months out of the year. So during this time, I have no choice but to buy imported organic. And certainly not from China.
Also, I don't know what your organic rules are but ours (Canada) are 2 years pesticide free. I am pretty sure after getting certification, no one comes out to check again to see if they are following the same practises. But I will continue to eat organic because even if they sprayed a couple times with pesticides, that would be better than the usual 7 or 8 times.

The big problem here is these big corporations like Walmart got serious "clout", so as could be expected they could and will "cut corners" and do almost anything to make THEIR HUGE PROFITS and keep the supply base in their favour- drive down the price, BUT AT WHAT COST....
Not only is quality compromised, but this puts OUR HEALTH in great danger and i believe it's one of the deception they are using to taint, create enormous confusion and lack of credibilty in the ORGANIC BRAND, which was once a trusted and reliable way of shopping for most of us. Sadly people are now turning away from buying Organics compliments of these AS - - - - - - (fill in the blanks).

Grow your own, is one of the alternatives but this option is very, very limited and buying local, well we still run the risk of pesticide use, so what other options are there???? For one we can boycott all these SOBS companies, write them letters etc, but we all got to do it collectively if we going to have any impact, bitching and whining on mercola.com just does'nt cut it, we need to deliver it where it counts, yeah right to the Jugular.........

Globalization is a "Buzz" word that just equates to fraudulant practices in countries like China, Russia, and other substandard countries which allows them dump their trash on unsuspecting consumers. At no other time in our lives has the phrase "Buyer beware" been more key to our health. Labeling is not the only answer since unscrupulous countries like China don't tell the truth and our Government seem bent on turning the other eye until a crisi hits like the Animal Food dissaster.

Where I live in South Carolina, CSA is all over the place, especially at the farmer's market. HOWEVER, when I talk to these farmers, almost everyone of them admits to using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Therefore, buying local, you are getting fresher produce, yes, but still with a hefty dose of poison. CSA is not the answer either, not here anyway. There is one certified organic farmer and one who advertises "organic", but the other farmers will tell you he does use some pesticides and chemical fertilizer. You just have to get to know who you are buying from. I have not and will not buy any food that is a product of China.

Wal-Mart recently got caught selling their brand name "best value" cans of chili. There was a warning on tv recently about botulism from this chili. Not that I would eat this crap anyways.

Thus the saying "local is the next organic". I trust Chinese imports about as much as I trust Pres. Bush. Conscious consumers will avoid Chinese products, esp food, not only because of health risks but because supporting local businesses helps ensure quality products with minimal environmental impacts.

Always read the label carefully! A lot of products print the name of an American distributor in large letters, but if you look closely you will see in tiny letters that it was manufactured somewhere else.
