Despite high vaccination rates, an outbreak of mumps occurred in July

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

i heard on the news the past few days that the medical profession is alarmed over the fact that a lot of parents are not vaccinating their children as required by the schools..they are citing religious reasons..it looks like a trend already in this country..

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

Mumps was extremely common when I was a child. The rarer complications like encephalitis and meningitis were almost unheard of.

Before mumps vaccines, mothers took their children to visit a child with the mumps to either contract the disease or show an immunity to it. I survived measles (rubeola) that way, chicken pox, and rubella. I was exposed multiple times to mumps, never came down with a discernible case of it.

We didn't worry about being sick with these illnesses because we knew we would get well.

Polio was probably the most feared disease there was when I was a child. I know several people who survived it. These other viruses were simply childhood diseases to be gotten over.

I think immunity is still a poorly understood function. It is certainly more than just having the antibodies present in the blood and tissues. The body has a very elegant and complex system for dealing with foreign and unwanted substances. Attempting to assist a system that is not fully understood is like giving a toddler a loaded gun. That little child knows about as much about that gun and the power it has as we do about our immune system and what it can do.

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

I had the mumps 3 times.

If infection with the actual virus can't guarantee immunity - how could a vaccine possibly accomplish the same?

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

what's the real difference 1 poison, or 2 poisons, they all going to wreak havoc on your immune system, 2 faster than 1 anyways.......

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

Chirocheer, I would suggest your sister-in-law, get in touch with religious groups that forbid vaccination, they might know doctors who are not in agreement with vaccinations. I still would like to see a longitudinal study done on the long term effects of vaccinations on our bodies as we get older.

Mary

re: Are Two Mumps Vaccinations Better Than One?

No vaccines are better than 1, 2, or 100! I posted this plea for help on another article, but I would like some help from Kansas vital voters. My sister-in-law lives in Manhattan, KS and just had her first run in with the medical profession over not vaccinating her son. She is looking for support groups and physicians that will support her decision to not vaccinate. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much!
