The problem affects both older veterans and younger ones who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their should be intergrated progams employing tools like EFT, yoga and great family support which i'm certain will have a huge impact in bringing these guys "truly home" again and reuniting them with their friends and families , but the government does'nt have time for this, they use you and then discard you, remember they got a war to fight and millions to be made not to mention the egos that's involved most of the times.....

I watched the parade on Sunday and saw an interview with one of the vets and my god this man was shaking and trembling while trying to speak and you could see and feel the emotions he was reliving after 60 plus years, man it looks like it had just happened......

While wars will probably never ceast we have to take our hats of to these guys who gave their all and to the ones who are currently serving in our armed forces all over the world. These are the true heroes of modern today, and i for one salute and thank you tremendously for making this world a safer place for us to live in......

re: Out of Uniform And on the Street -- Veterans Constitute a Quarter of America’s Homeless

Having a son in the armed services I can say the bonuses are not given in a lump sum, but added to you paycheck. And many times the tuition assistance barely covers tuition. Also, many of the people who have enlisted have not been taught to manage money. So part of the problem might be Uncle Sam does not keep his promises.

Mary

re: Out of Uniform And on the Street -- Veterans Constitute a Quarter of America’s Homeless

Personally, .. I'd like to see some PTSD inflicted on the likes of Bush and Cheney. They want the country to go to war so much,... let's put them on the front line of battle for a few months and see what they think of the idea then.

The following quote from Henry Kissinger speaking at a meeting of the Council On Foriegn Relations, seems to represent the mindset of such men quite well:

"Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foriegn policy."

re: Out of Uniform And on the Street -- Veterans Constitute a Quarter of America’s Homeless

War is hell. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not an easy condition to get over. PTSD is now recognized, however, not to be limited to having served in the military. How many individuals go into the military with unrecognized PTSD and simply becomes more pronounced with the military life demands?

Soldiers do not need to leave the military penniless. Tens of thousands of dollars are paid in lump sum bonuses that are often squandered before leaving the service. Tens of thousands of dollars of educational money is provided to each soldier that provides money for not only tuition and books, but also money for general living expenses on a monthly basis.

The largest percentage of homeless individuals do indeed suffer from psychiatric problems. All need to be helped. Unfortunately, people can not be helped if they do not wish to be helped. The ACLU has worked hard so that we can not place people into appropriate psychiatric hospitals and force them to get help against their will.

The homeless / mental health issue is not an easy one to resolve. EFT can be a component to treating PTSD.

Nutrition is also another major component. I have had several people with PTSD that was attributed to being a veteran being resolved with simply taking large doses of fish oil , for instance. Vitamin D deficiencies play a part. Poor sleep habits play a part.

Just because one has a history of having being a veteran, does not necessarily mean that all cases of PTSD are caused by being a veteran. Perhaps pre screening for PTSD
