A spokeswoman for the group said that the bulbs have been triggering migraines either because of their flickering, or the low intensity of their light

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

Flourescent bulbs tend to also have more blue light spectrum than incandescent which is reactive with porphyrins. We weren't meant to have blue light at night. Blue light shuts down melatonin production. Studies have shown reduced cancer rates with increased melatonin production...which again, blue light inhibits. Blue light is good at a certain time of day. And anyone who has had any type of porphyric type damage to the liver and suffers from depressive attacks should avoid blue light after a certain time of day. Also, beta carotene is a natural blue light filter. Eat your lutenoids most especially if you are a sulfur intolerant type. Flourescent bulbs may save energy, but are bad for those with porphyric symptoms or heavy metal damage. Banning incandescent bulbs is another well intended, but poorly understood idea.

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

I haven't switched to the new bulbs simply because I don't know how to dispose of them properly. We live in the midwest, where recycling is only done at free-will 50 miles away. Needless to say - I wouldn't have a clue as to what to do with a mercury filled bulb. I'm sticking with the "old school" bulbs.

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

I hate them. With a passion.

It isn't so much the mercury that bothers me, it's the severe headaches they cause. My eyes strain in the non-heat-generated, artifical, flickery electrical light. The squeal they emit drives me mad. And the flicker - even in the so-called 'non-flicker new-generation bulbs' - uuuugh, it's awful. I realise not everyone can detect the flicker or hear the sound, but I've been known to run around a room pulling out every plug in sight trying to find the cause of electrical noise...!!

If they ban normal bulbs I'll be stocking up a full cupboard full of the things. It would be an absolute nightmare to have to use CFL's thanks to the govt trying to stop global warming. There are things far more important adding to the problem than a few lightbulbs!! Make recycling easier, cut packaging, eat organic and local, walk/bike, turn of things when not in use... most importantly, cut the over-consumption! Sheesh!

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

Here in the UK others have pointed out that the old style bulbs give out heat and K, people are riding the global warming bandwagon to promote these newer bulbs (oops - did I say bandwagon? I meant gravy train). Anyway, others have pointed out that the old style bulbs give out useful heat into inhabited rooms: the drop in heat will simply cause people to bump up the heating ....

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

LED: energy efficient, very long life, no mercury, and no flickering.

re: Do Energy Efficient Bulbs Trigger Migraines?

I understand that people who are sensitive to EMF's cannot tolerate fluorescent bulbs.
