It is a sad state of affairs, when the giant Monsanto has to pick on a farmer for being smart enough to save seeds from his own crop to plant the following year. Is Monsanto that financially strapped that they had to go to court over who owns the farmers current crop of seeds? It's the same type of situation as Big Pharma and the FDA attacking supplement manufacturers, so as not to lose money from the supplement market.

To protect yourself from these GM crops, remember that produce numbers starting with 9 are organic. Those that start with a 4 are conventionally produced. GM crops start with a 3. I don't know if anyone is fudging with their numbers, but it's a good guideline. Of course, not very many people actually think to look.

I have found pomegranates and oranges at my co-op with 3's, so be careful no matter where you purchase your food.

We all need to avoid GM food. Not only is it not good for us, but this article shows how the food giants like Monsanto will stop at nothing to make a profit.

I don't think the word 'evil' does these guys justice. Why do people buy this crap? Do they not see what the potential is - a la the terminator seed, which would give them complete control over ALL crops in the country if they had it their way?

In fact, petitioner forthrightly acknowledged below "the indisputable fact that second-generation, geneti-cally-altered seed contain[s] * * * patented man-made components."

The previous statement is from the legal brief. His seeds contained Monsanto's patented chemical so it only makes sense for Monsanto to sue. The farmer is using their technology to gain money without paying them for the use of their product. Monsanto also helps employ tons of workers. Evidence is obviously lacking against them. Maybe if there were fewer strawman arguments against companies and more solid evidence against them we would see a change.

This is one of the reasons we prefer the organic approach. On our farm we currently have one crop that is for heritage seed production only, for the commercial market. We also have another crop that is being grown from heritage seed we have previously saved.
