Persistent distress in a mother, such as depression or anxiety, can increase the risk that the child will develop asthma by an average of 25 percent

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

I wonder if they took into account how clean the mom's kept the houses compared to the "not stressed" moms. As well as how they fed the kids. I know for myself, when I'm feeling the most stressed - I'm the most apt to opt out for fast or processed foods. In fact, the less I have to do, the better. And I don't keep up with paperwork and housework as well either - choosing instead to buy smelly cover up stuff to make the house smell better. What is usually the worst is the paper clutter which is the hardest to deal with.

I have 1 child with asthma. I was super stressed from lack of sleep when she was a baby. I had a very hyper 2 year old and a very fussy newborn. My husband is a clutter and paper pack rat. My ability to deal with the household dwindled to almost non existant during this time. I actually cried the day the older child turned 3 because I could not remember anything much that had happened over the last year and had "lost" a year of her life. V was much smaller than her older sister at 2 (though she has several cousins now who are equally as small as she was - so I think a lot of her size was genetics) - and ate much less but was just as active. I nursed her until she was just past 2. She had her first asthma attack at 19 months old and was hospitalized 3 times in 9 months. She's now on medication - which I hate - but has "episodes" just often and severe enough that we feel we have to keep her on the meds.

Since then we have been through many stressful situations, and looking back, I will have to admit that most stressful times were when she was at her worse - but then so was the house and meals and our schedule.

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

What they failed to discuss is the source of these mother's stress. Most children who develop severe asthma and those who actually die from a severe attack, status asthmaticus, come from low economic groups, often living in urban housing where toxic environmental factors such as, cockroach excrement, rodent dander and poor property up-keep, cause the majority of these children's symptoms. I wonder why these mothers are anxious and depressed!

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

This article certainly doesn't support my experience. I experienced anxiety from about age 6 on that increased in severity through my teen years and continued, except for a brief hiatus during which I was either pregnant or breastfeeding. When my youngest was weaned, the anxiety returned with a vengeance after about six months. I was on tranquilizers and antidepressants (I wasn't depressed - just anxious) for over 10 years. My family doctor finally agreed to help me get off the meds. The anxiety left for good when I started seeing a chiropractor who was trained in nutrition. Haven't had a problem since.

Neither of my children have had asthma. So much for that study.

It surprises me that no one tried to see if the cause of the stress in the mother could have also caused the asthma in the child. Or perhaps the child had asthma and it caused stress in the mother. So many unexamined factors...

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

I agree with Russ.

Also I would like to know where it puts my children. (I have 4 of them)
I have had anxiety for 7 years, during that time I was pregnant with all 4. I also had asthma since 2nd grade till after 17yrs old.

None of my children got asthma. One got anxiety.
ummmm. I don't know. This one is wacky.

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

My sister developed Asthma after being exposed to formaldehyde at school. They were renovating the entire school and were using chemicals which made a lot of people sick. This was when she was in first grade, so just think how sensitive a child's body is at this point in their life.
/sigh
My parents should have sued them.

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

With respect to an emotional root of the illness that is asthma,... I have observed that asthma is typically a physical expression of repressed fear. .... Along these lines it is interesting to note that in regards to acupuncture meridians as identified in Oriental Medicine, ... the Kidney meridian (which along with the bladder are associated with the emotion of fear),.... ends right in the center of the chest.

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

Are any of these children taking Calcium supplements?

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

While I agree to some extent that the mothers health will affect that of her child many times a nutritionally incorrect diet can lead to stress. So I doubt if they took all environmental factors into consideration.

Mary

re: Kids With Stressed Moms are More Prone to Asthma

Sorry, this study is wacko in methodology.

What About Kids Without Moms?

Kids With Stressed Dads?

Orphans?

Kids With Stressed Aunts & Uncles?

Genetic Predisposition?

Environmental Exposures?

Food, Beverage & Drug Exposures?
