Once in a while I will watch some other movie like if there is something uplifting or educating. That is all I watch. No news that's for sure, only makes me lose my will to live. So, no need to make myself depressed. The cooking programs are very useful though :) and because I'm watching them while eating anyway, they will not make me eat unnecessarily...

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

I can relate so well to this article. My son who just turned 18 has had a TV in his room for quite a few years. While he was younger, it was easier to control the amount of time he watched it, but after the teenage years came, it was very difficult. He doesn't do well in school, his eating habits are poor no matter what I tell him is better for him to eat, and he now usually always eats in his room. We do have some family time, but I wish I had known more about all this when he was younger, he would not have had the TV so early or video games he has now.

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

ZPE

You're so right - Parents need to realize that children WILL learn - whether you teach them something or not. Their minds and hearts are being filled with something - be sure it's what YOU want them to learn.

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

I literally don't know any parents in real life - outside of my sisters, who haven't put tvs in their children's bedrooms.

I do think they are not measuring effect, but cause. When parents choose to put a tv in a young child's bedroom, they are doing it specifically to help occupy the child's time, and increase their own personal time. Such behaviors go hand in hand with spending less time in any activities with their children, and spending less time on meal preparation (IE the fast food connection).

Sometimes it's hard for my kids - being the only kids at the cafeteria with a healthy lunch - not having cell phones, etc. I think they realize how much I love them and care for them through these harder parenting decisions.

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

My son 10 years old was born with Down syndrome. He had 14 aspirational pneumonias in the first 2 years. They had to give hi Lasix on several occasion. On an ultra sound taken when I was pregant it show excess fluid buildup in the chest cavity, and this went on for 3 years. We never found otu what was the cause of the fluid buildup, no docotrs could figure it out. He has no congenetal heart problems so it didn't make sense, but they didn;t bother finding out the cause. I was given 9 injection of steroids when I was pregant starting in my 5th mth of pregancy. I am wondering if maybe it was too much.

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

We have had a few V V's on TV as of late!

My observation is that they continually look at the consequences of TV in the bedroom, or being watched by young children.

To me there must be an underlying reason why TVs are supposedly so prevalent in children's bedrooms, or why the TV is watched during the family meal etc etc.

My 'guess' is that it to compensate for lack of family communication and interaction because for many parents that is just too hard...

Unfortunately 'values' are being taught less and less by the ones that should have the responsibility - the parents....and those 'values' are now being taught to many via the TV set...

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

Television is a great temptation and a trap. Once the TV is on, two+ hours can just fly by and before you know it, then it's time to sleep. My neices and nephews used to think it was cool when I lived out in the country with no TV. When they visited we played outside (making up our own games) and baked homemade bread inside. TV squashes creativity and adventure and robs you of your time!

re: A TV in the Bedroom Means an Unhealthy Teen

Televisions are for information, not entertainment.

Mary
