The scientists found that even after sleep deprivation, people had periods of near-normal brain function. Their biological clock needs extra time to rest, but they have to start school at the crack of dawn while little kids with alot more energy (compare a child boucing out of bed to watch Saturday cartoons while the teenager sleeps in until noon) gets to start much later. It affects their growth, development, and their ability to concentrate and learn.

Maybe society needs to look at whether we're too overworked these days, instead of blaming everyone for sedentary lifestyles and junk food for obesity. While junk foods in large intakes aren't healthy and can lead to obesity, a lack of proper rest also contributes to obesity.

And adults who are sleep-deprived put themselves at risk of heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses in addition to interaction issues and impaired motor abilities. I wonder how many accidents happen from drivers who are so tired they fall asleep at the wheel...

re: Without Sleep, You Can't Make Sense of What You See

From the main article: This study has implications for a whole range of people who have to
struggle through night work, from truckers to on-call doctors. "The
periods of apparently normal functioning could give a false sense of
competency and security, when in fact, the brain's inconsistency could
have dire consequences," Chee said.

Makes you wonder how many 'accidents' by either overworked doctors in hospitals or from truckers are caused by sleep deprivation?

re: Without Sleep, You Can't Make Sense of What You See

As an example of this, I have noticed that playing the "Snake" game on a cell phone I used to have, I could never get good scores if I played it after 10pm.
