They are not the same.

I understand the intent is to contrast a CSD with a vaginal delivery. I am a strong opponent of unnecessary CSDs and a great believer in natural childbirth, that is, vaginal birth without medical intervention - no episiotomy, no pain meds, no electrodes on the baby's scalp, etc. etc. I have said before in this forum that natural childbirth is orgasmic, and that no woman should be denied that experience.

Samurai, I hear you! Most women who have delivered vaginally have to deal with that, er, inconvenience eventually. A 5-minute surgical intervention repairs it forever. It changed my life, no kidding!

re: Natural Childbirth Makes Mothers More Responsive to Their Own Baby's Cry

Just a comment on the article's title. Natural childbirth is not at all the same thing as vaginal childbirth.

I've had two vaginal childbirths. One was in a hospital with Nubain and and epidural. One was at a home with nothing and 'natural'.

There's a lot of reasons to avoid caesarean delivery. The fact that it increases infant mortality being the most important. We have hospitals performing them because they lower lawyer's bills, not because they save more lives.

re: Natural Childbirth Makes Mothers More Responsive to Their Own Baby's Cry

I guess that having an intact perineum is one of the very few benefits of a c-section.
I wonder if these researchers considered the effect of breastfeeding? I know that my breasts were VERY responsive to my baby even though I had a c-section. I always considered myself to be a very responsive mother. I was somewhat surprised to read this study.

re: Natural Childbirth Makes Mothers More Responsive to Their Own Baby's Cry

Aaaaaahhh. I am reminded of my natural childbirth experience everytime I cough, laugh too hard, sneeze.....
