As I transfusion scientist, I was aware from early on of haemochromatosis and it&#39;s effects however as the appropriate blood tests had always been normal, it did not occur to me that it might be an issue for me. It wasn&#39;t until tests were done at a point I was taking a mineral supplement which contained iron amongst its ingredients, that these tests became elevated and I was subsequently shown to be a compound heterozygote for haemochromatosis. This heterozygosity means I do not have the same potential for iron overload as a homozygote but the potential is there. I am managing it with a low iron diet and phlebotomy is not required which is fortunate as I do not tolerate it. I would therefore also recommend that testing for this condition should be done every few years, particularly for females, and not to consider yourself in the clear after just one test. For females, I would consider it particularly important to be checked after menopause as menstruation and pregnancy offer some protection from iron overload in this condition. My father died in his mid forties of a condition which in retrospect, in light of my diagnosis, could well have been a complication of haemochromatosis. If not found and treated, it is fatal. Do not take iron supplements unless tests show that you need them.</p>
