To determine the middle we must define the extremes. Years ago we knew a few fat people and our largest acquaintance defined that upper limit in or mind.

Today we can watch television programs where we get to know people far larger than anyone we would every meet in person. This larger upper limit encourages many of us to triangulate to a larger self.

As the upper limit increases so goes the norm. As the norm increases we originally "normal" weight people become freaks.
