Obstructions in the nose or in the pallet, or even a deviated septum can cause obstructive apneas. Central apneas cannot be prevented or cured by weight loss or physical activity (in fact some types of physical activity can make centrals worse). Take it from someone who has very bad mixed apneas (central and obstructive) not caused by weight loss or exercise. If an M.D. or D.O. (or even a P.A. or nurse practitioner) doesn't know about a disease, they should not offer their expert medical opinion on it. Sleep apnea kills almost 2000 people a year (that only counts the people who it can be attributed to--there are tens of thousands who have never been diagnosed). In fact, there is a study by Dr. Syed Quadri out of Salt Lake City that actually showed that ambien DECREASED central apneas from an average of 26 to 7 per hour.

re: Why Mix Ambien With Sleep Apnea?

It seems that several people replying believe that overweight is the main cause of sleep apnea, and that all overweight people will have it and thin or normal weight people will not. WRONG !

My son is 32 yrs old, about 6' 2" and might weigh 170 lbs if he is lucky, maybe 165 lbs. He has sleep apnea, so I just found out from his wife. He stops breathing in his sleep and also snores. So those who believe no thin people have apnea need to do more investigation.

re: Why Mix Ambien With Sleep Apnea?

I have sleep apnea and was going to get the CPAP. However, I wanted to try everything I could think of alternatively to help first. I won't bore you with everything I tried and didn't work, just what did work. My husband and I went to the beach for a retreat and we both noticed that we slept more deeply and better. By accident, I ran into a website that sells a device that throws Himalyan Sea Salt in the air. Now I snore way less, and wake up refreshed. The device is called a Saline Device and if you Google it, you will get the company (something like Natural-Salt Lamps or something like that). Not quite sure why, but it works great, and its not even touted as solving sleep apnea issues!

re: Why Mix Ambien With Sleep Apnea?

There are documented cases of statins causing loss of respiratory control during sleep. Obesity is the canned answer for causes of apnea, unless you are a very thin oriental. Red yeast rice is used abundantly in the Orient. It is a form of statin. Interesting theory, huh?

That's is an overwhelming number. Don't we think that this is strange? The companies that produce Ambien and similar sleeping pills are making a fortune. I had CFS at one point and didn't sleep for a week. I finally broke down and started taking sleeping pills. When I realized that it was the electromagnetic radiation in my environment making me sick, I moved up into the mountains in an area that was out of cell phone and television range. Immediately, 50% of my symptoms disappeared. Within two months I was off the Ambien. I stayed there for four months and now no longer have CFS. I did however become electrosensitive. However, I feel that being electro-insensitive is the problem. There is a major coverup going on regarding the adverse affects of cell phones, cell phone towers, and other EMR. I believe that they are the major cause of the majority of the diseases that are now plaging the world - CFS, Autism, Alzheimer's, ADHD, brain tumors, leukemias and many other forms of cancers.

re: Why Mix Ambien With Sleep Apnea?

I am very thin and I have apnea. My neck is small and the tissues collapse during sleep. Big Pharma pushes drugs for apnea, because people like me are desperate for relief. Day in, day out, no sleep, you are open to ANY idea which might provide restful sleep. I won't use the drugs, because I am self educated regarding health issues and know that the drugs are harmful and won't work well enough.

re: Why Mix Ambien With Sleep Apnea?

Why don't the doctors just tell the patients with sleep apnea to loose weight. Especially if they are overweight. I have seen very few people with sleep apnea who are normal body weight, I have never seen a thin person with sleep apnea.
