You don't need to work up a mental sweat for hours on end, just engage your brain in 20 minute exercises several times throughout the day. You'll be amazed at how much your mental sharpness will improve, and at how quickly this happens. I have always enjoyed working crossword puzzles, but always did them in a lacadaisical manner, answering the obvious clues and not caring whether or not I ever finished a puzzle. Then several years ago I read an article in the Columbus Dispatch about a particular group of nun's at a local convent.

It seems that almost all of them experienced longevity though it was not necessarily attributed to their individual gene pools. What was most impressive that they lived long, yet did so while retaining a very sharp mind until eventually answering the Lord's call to come "home." Most lived well into their 90's and a great number made it well into their 100's.

A group of geriatric MD's looked into it for answers as to why these women were living long healthy lives, both physically and mentally. Of course their spiritual devotion to God and humanity was typically considered to be a big part of that reason. However, the one thing that ran consistant in their lifestyle was the fact that in addition to daily prayer they read voraciously, and that they worked crossword puzzles competatively every single day! They would photocopy the daily newspaper puzzles, and distibute them to every member of the convent. They would see who would finish first, with few or no mistakes.

There was nothing scientific which proved absolutely that such daily mental exercise will assure a long, mentally sharp existence, but it is pretty safe to assume that it sure didn't hurt those women. I believe without a doubt that such exercises work to enhance one's mental sharpness. As such I will continue to do likewise for as long as possible...so help me God!

re: Use Your Brain A LOT More Often or Risk Losing It

In most cases, mental atrophe is developed through lazy habits. We can stay alert with activity, which includes mental, physical, and social exercise.

Keep fit with a regular exercise program and healthy diet. Exercise your mind with critical thinking. Don't assume the media are telling you the truth. Use your own mind to search truth. Writing is also a great exercise to both find truth and share what you learn with others. And service to others is the vital link to a healthy, happy life.

Wishing all of you the very best New Year!

Most of everything that people do in society and think of is left brained. We have forgotten how to use all of our brains and how to have fun. There has been research to show that 97% of the population only uses 1% of their brain capacity and intellect. What we have here is prime example of work, work, work to make money, money, money. People are unhealthier and unhappier than ever because we have lost the awareness of love!
