Personally, I rather doubt that winning the lottery caused this poor man's death. Hopefully, his gains were distributed to family and friends in need. I don't play the lottery often, but every once in awhile, I spend a buck and take a shot. I work very hard and still don't make enough to make ends meet. I'm not spending the winter in Maui! though I wish I could. Geez, I'd be happy to just be able to afford a vacation.

If it is true that there is a high incidence of death amongst lottery winners, then my highly suspicious nature and knowledge of things such as HAARP which has been suggested could be used for ill intentions, cause me to suspect the possibility of treachery. My research into such matters indicates that "they" can take you out any time they please, just as they did with Senator Paul Wellstone from Minnesota and so many more...corruption and deception are the tools of the trade in these interesting times.

If I won the lottery, I'd sure as heck make sure the money was well distributed amongst many friends and relatives. Then if we all die of sudden unexplained deaths, maybe someone would take note and actually look into it.

Bottom line is...I'd rather have money than not. Money isn't what makes you happy, but it sure would be nice to have enough.

Any major life change produces stress-even if it is a desired change, such as more money. The amount of money won or inherited can affect the level of stress you experience. If you are earning under $40,000 a year and you win over 100 million dollars, your life will change dramatically, more than you could have imagined and more than you can handle! If you had trouble living on the money you are earning, how will you manage greater income?

I agree with Dr. Mercola, that people are frequently damaged by winning (or inheriting) vast sums of money. However, I believe the problem lies in the appalling lack of preparation people have for receiving ANY kind of blessing. There seems to be some kind of stigma attached to being given something for which you did no discernable work to warrent the gift/blessing/winnings. And if you think about it, that stigma is placed there by other people for various self-serving reasons.

I believe that things come into our hands for a reason. We are given a certain stewardship, if you will, over many things. If we treat the gift/blessing/winnings as a (sacred) trust from the Universe (or whatever your word for the Prime Source is) then we stand a better chance of rightly governing our actions.

Of course there will still be stress to handle, such as, many so-called friends and family wanting to have a say in how the money is spent or invested. My advice would be to let all and sundry know that the responsibiliy rests with you and that you alone will make any decisions regarding the dispensation of the funds. If advice or opinions have not been solicited, then treat them as though you didn't even hear it. And be kind.

I am speaking from personal experience. I inherited a small trust fund when my mother died. Everyone who knew I had inherited money wanted to have a say in what I did with it. I was firm, but kind and explained that the amount I inherited was no one's business but mine and the responsibility for the funds rested between me and my trust officer at the bank. Plain and simple. Some feathers were ruffled but, guess what? They got over it. That was ten years ago and through the co-management of my trust officer and me, the principal has grown to over three times its original value. And it keeps growing, whether the economy is booming or recessing.

I come from a banking family. We were taught the true value of money and how to increase it. We were taught respect for what money can do and responsibility that comes with having any amount of it. That is where people go in the wrong direction. They don't see it as a personal responsibility.

Interesting.

I can confirm that, as an observer, I have witnessed "bad luck" befalling some lotto-winners. Of course it was mainly of their own doing, a consequence of their going overboard, crashing three new cars in a row, and such...

In that sense, I believe that Dr. Mercola's observations are spot-on. Unresolved personal issues, such as self-value, self-respect and so on, mixed with unexpected riches, can be a deadly combination.

On the other hand... I can think right now of at least two or three people whose only hope in life - i.e., to get at least some joy and a night of carefree sleep - would be a miracle involving a huge amount of money. That would save them AND their families.

The people I am talking about are as "enlightened" as is humanly possible. Unfortunately, most societies do not allow such free-thinkers - as creative and precious to society at large as they might be (N.B. I am NOT saying that an individual must be "useful" to society, I am just stating a reality) - to live happily ever after. On the contrary, bureaucracy seems to enjoy going after them and after what little earthly posessions they might have.

So, taking that into account, I cannot really feel sorry for lotto-winners... Sorry. ;)

i can see where not being prepared could cause one to stress over winning money. i have 6 children, a disabled mom, step-mom and brother. if i were to eveer win the lottery, i'd divide the money amongst us all (with an equal amount to charitable groups we support both at home and abroad) so that each one of us could go to school or start a business and pay of debts and perhaps buy a home (only my mom and my step-mom and dad owns thier own). i also have several friends right on the edge of poverty i'd want to help out. perhaps if people were to think it through and not just be hung up on the greed of "I have it, I'm keeping it", it might not be so deadly, but instead a catalyst for good in their lives. just a thought.

Interesting article. I had similar thoughts about people who win big. A waitress here in Vegas won 27 million on the megabucks some years back. Some few months later she wound up a parapelegic after a car wreck. It makes you think. When you suddenly stretch yourself out too far, too high, you lose your bearings. What goes up, must come down and in this case, a crash landing.

If I were to win millions of dollars, I think it would improve my health. Mostly because right now I can't afford to do all the things that I would like to do in order to be healthy. I could order things from Mercola, I could get regular massages and I could afford a personal trainer to get me going in the right direction with my exercise. Plus I could afford to eat only organic foods and to even have someone cook them for me if I can't do it myself. I can totally understand the emotional side effect of becoming rich all of a sudden and I can see how many people would have terrible emotional side effects to a sudden change in lifestyle, but again if one is aware of it then one could use some of the money for therapy or EFT as well. Money can be both great and disasterous, but I would love to give it a try!

The sad reality is that if we looked at Americans (westernized cultures as well) in general, including the exceptional lottery winners, very, very few have any segment of their lives "together". Whether we look at finances, relationships, mental/emotional health, or physical health... few people have any one or all of these life issues resolved and therein is a fundamental truth in life that it is not a game of perfect. I have interviewed hundreds of my patients on these very issues and its pretty amazing how none of us seem to "get it all right". And these patients know of remarkably few who have one or all of these life areas "right". Keep working on you, your loved ones, and your world.

I have struggled for years to see why it is important for ME to work to stop gambling done by others. I could really care less. Even after reading Dr Mercola's article I can not find a reason to exert one piece of my time or energy to give it a second thought.

There are SO many things that people do that should be illegal for their own good. (smoking for example). The fact is> this is AMERICA !! People have always been free to do what they want to do. They have the freedom to decide how to spend or waste their money.

I involve myself when the destructive actions of individuals effects the greater good of society. For example...I devoted every ounce of my being to informing the world of Michael Schiavo's efforts to starve his disabled wife, Terri Schindler-Schiavo, by court order. Terri is now dead however. This court precedent now allows many untold millions to die a cruel and inhumane death. America watched it happen. Aging baby boomers beware. It is all in preparation of the strain your aging will place on the nations economy. Especially the economy of Florida. Many of you will be treated as dogs in an overfilled shelter. THAT concerns me.

Anyway.. tell me again why I should labor to stop a person from buying a lottery ticket?? The fool and his money are soon parted. If those misguided individuals did not spend it on the lottery, they would waste it another way, like drugs.

Purhaps the lottery is the lesser of the evils! That is one less dollar they have for drugs.

I see the lottery as a giant idiot raffle, created for and funded entirely by idiots. It is none of my concern. If the government wants to shave a bit of money from all of that..that is the concern of those who contribute to it. It is none of my affair. To me it is NO differant than a tax on cigarettes. I also do not care about that.

I am completely sincere.....How is it differant????????????????????????

It is not my place to tell others what their children can and cannot do, including gambling. It is not my place to tell others what they can and cannot spend their money on, including lottery tickets.

Ok, this is a very interesting article. Our friends won the CA state lottery back in may of 98..32 million. I have to honestly say that winning the lottery for them has had it's pros and cons. But for the most part, cons! I do not have the time to go into great detail here, but let me just say that they are no longer pictures of health. They spend their time eating at expensive dining establishments, drinking a ton of "fine" wines, shopping for $$$$$ material items, etc. But their health is now poor, they take no time to shop for and prepare healthy meals at home. They take no time to exercise and no time for anything spiritual. They are a complete MESS now that they have all of this money! According to my girlfriends 85 year old mom, it was not a blessing. I also worry about my girlfriend because she is now taking cymbalta, lexapro, ambien and valium. Enough said!

Yes poor guy, but at the same time, he most likely lived the earthly experience he was destined to. We choose our life, reality and destiny before we are even born. We are here to serve our being, even though that may be seconds, days or years on earth. There is a lesson here though, most think wealth is health and it is not. Health is taking responsability for yourself in all aspects of life. Money is just energy, just like everything else in this world

Sudden money (like 200 million) would be a hard thing to handle for anyone with out Gods grace and guidance! There is good, there is evil, and there are, let’s say, THINGS! Things are not good or evil but they can darn sure bring about good or evil depending on how we react to them.

As a Christian, I know that all finances (high or low) are a Blessing from God. How we use them is a factor in our judgment by God! Also there are many examples in both the Old and New Testament of how God honors and blesses well managed finances. This is to say nothing about giving! (yet) Just about investing and making it grow (even 200 million!) God hates money that does not grow!

Now when we throw in the blessings of giving, God will make sure he makes your money grow, but you still have to step up to the plate and invest it! (You don’t have to be a financial wizard or anything, just CDs est. God will take over)) You can’t just have fun with it, even if your idea of fun is giving it all away! In the case of 200 million, nothing changes. Many people will say something like, “I don’t need to be a “Capitalist Pig” and invest this, I don’t want more money! I’m going to have fun with it and give a lot of it away to people that can use it.

God certainly honors giving to the poor, but by not investing and growing your finances, you will miss out on the kinds of blessings that could include a long healthy happy life.

As strange as it may seem, I believe managing the money is as important as giving it if you want to live a long happy life of enjoying it! Something to consider in case you are the next inline to win 200 million!
