I agree. My mom graduated from med school in 1936 so she learned the old fashioned way. She'd make the drug reps wait til the pts were gone if she saw them at all. now the docs overbook to cover for no shows and then the cute blonds show up with pizza or something so pt. waits longer. I love it! seduced into bad medical practice for free food. the worst one was a psych being comped a golf weekend at the Breakers to push Paxil. Now the vets are starting. took kitties for legally mandated rabies only and the vet had a "pt. coordinator." puhleeze! the guy ws a salesman and pushing heartworm preventatives for cats that stay indoors. I've never had an animal get a mosquito bite in my life, not even my dogs.
they were highly indignant I didn't go for feline leukemia and Hiv or the kitty equivalent, and distemper etc. There was a worm issue so I let them pill the boys because I figured one time and it's done. of course they gave me the flea junk because that's where the tapeworms come from. Oh yeah???? I doubt it. the guys didn't get that and won't unless I see one of the ugly black beasts on their beautiful white fur. These are the sweetest, happiest cats and love everyone, but one really hissed at the vet who seemed nice. Pretty smart. Cat knew what was up with that.
Good news is that FL Medicaid has funded a pain cessation program where you can pick acupuncture or massage. I go for acupuncture. I hope other states will follow suit.

Actually, Lewra, it's the left-wing extremists (and most of them are, indeed, extreme) that have moved so far to the left, they make moderates look ultra-conservative. The Republicans want to win the war, whereas the Democrats (the Bush-haters, and they really do hate him so much, it's scary--I didn't hate Clinton, I just thought he was a joke) would rather have us lose all our troops in Iraq just so the President will look bad. Now that scares me!

The conservative party cares about people, the liberal party cares about agendas.

And I assert this is a generalized statement.

If you look at the approximate time window of Americans being ignorant about health, food, world events, politics, and just about everything else, it coincides exactly with the popularization of television - the deadly combination of 'entertainment' and subtle thought manipulation. Our apathy, laziness and lack of decent education are also most likely a direct result of the same.

People are ultimately responsible for themselves...turning the state and society into nannies is not the answer; nor is it good for humanity in the long run. Americans won't improve much until their priorities change - which isn't likely to happen. We get the society we deserve.

Until consumer behavior changes, the McD's or Starbucks of the world will flourish, because over 62% of all meals per day are consumed outside the home in America.

The paradigm needs to be addressed with consumers really taking charge of their own caloric intake adn the quality of that intake.

This article reminds me of a few years ago when my cardiologist suggested to me that I would be the perfect candidate for the " Nuclear Chemical Stress Test" I was actually participating in a drug trial (without really understanding that was what it was). There were at least 8 nicely suited drug reps and 3 doctors to witness my test. They injected me with a drug which made my heart react as if I was climbing up a mountain while hooked up to EKG moniters, and walking on a treadmill. I was also injected with radioactive material which would create some great pictures after I finished the test by being filmed with the latest in nuclear technology. Following the test, during which I thought my heart was actually going to burst, my tricuspid valve began leaking. This was a new development. I already had problems with my aortic valve and had a recent mild heart attack. I would never have allowed them to do this to me if I had access to the truth. Was my doctor brainwashed by the pharm reps? I blindly trusted my doctor. I am not so trusting now.

Many people care about their health, however, most of us have been indoctirnated by television & Radio advertisments that associate eating McDonald's or other fast foods with fun and family. Also if you are told something is true long enough you start to believe it. Like we have been told all our lives that vaccinations help prevent illnesses. We were not given the information that they can cause other illnesses.

All politics and advertising are attempts at brain-washing, whether for good or bad.
We have to sort out the truth on our own.

I do believe that many well-intentioned physicians are following the misguided paradigm that often unnecessary medicines and surgery are the best way to health. In fact they may be subject to loose their license if they don't follow this dictum (that's where politics comes into play). Sad but true.

Our challenge is to educate others about this problem. If there is enough demand from the public, we may be able to persuade our political representatives to fix this corrupt and off-track medical system and to resist the influence of powerful lobbies that would like to make the system even worse. Of course, we can also challenge this system by taking our health into our own hands as recommended by Dr Mercola. That effectively short-circuits the system. If we stay healthy, we don't pay to support the system.

No mention of the left-wing news media, Don? And by the way, people know McDonald's and others of its ilk are bad for their bodies, but guess what? They don't care.

You want to see a real brainwashed State? Go to North Korea, where you would probably be denied access to Mercola's website, or further yet, not even know of its existence.

The truth is that we have the freedom to believe whatever we want here, be they truth or lies, because for the most part, we have the freedom to print what is our (but not absolute) truth, or what we believe to be the truth. Of course there are some who are lying and know it ("what the definition of 'is' is", for lack of a better example), but that's another thought for another review.

Besides, some of those who claim we are a bunch of brainwashed Americans may be the biggest brainwashers themselves. (Healthy) food for thought.

Interesting that an article on brainwashing has prominent ads for Mobil Oil and Disney Corporation. Commercial advertising to sell us products, and right-wing media (Hannity, Rush, Fox News, et al) to sell us ideology are also forms of brain washing! The results of this brainwashing are all around us. As a nation, we over-consume products we don't need, many of which do us personal harm (McDonalds, Burger King), and products that harm the environment (SUVs). Additionally, the public has come to embrace a war-based semi-fascist government as the best way to govern. Our loss of civil liberties and a two-front war (soon to be expanded to a third) did not happen in a vacuum- these things have been sold to the American public.
