Her question to me was what dose of probiotic to take for how long just to recover from that! I did not know-
further she was confused over the new drinks and regular yogurt products that tell you it takes 2 weeks. I agree with Dr Mercola that finding good products is of issue and as the population at large begins to use them- whatever can be done to help steer them in the right direction will be valuable. I also consider that part of the population that is temporarily given tube feedings or that is prescribed supplements of what I call the "sugar milk"- I bet the effect of probiotics for these folks- and a change in the "formula"- would show great results!

re: Good Bacteria Boost The Immune Systems of Hospital Patients

Thank you for posting this article Dr. Mercola. I am just starting my career as a nurse in an ICU. I will bring a copy of this article to my unit and discuss it with my colleagues. A great deal of our patients are on antibiotics for one reason or another - and I have seen time and again the havoc wreaked on their GI tracts. In this era of evidence-based practice, it is great to see researchers working on natural ways to counterbalance allopathic interventions.

re: Good Bacteria Boost The Immune Systems of Hospital Patients

Lots of great comments. I'm bad at science so I'm not knowledgable about probiotics and am glad they do lots of good. However, I do know that my wife's dad's uncle was cured of tuberculosis of the lungs back in the 1930's by a 40-days diet of raw milk only. The Weston A. Price Foundation can help you find suppliers of raw milk and raw milk products. I've recovered some good health since reading Dr. Mercola's articles on raw milk and finding a supplier of raw milk through the Foundation. Good health to one and all!

re: Good Bacteria Boost The Immune Systems of Hospital Patients

It is estimated that our paleolithic ancestors had 1 million times the bacterial count as we do. This was due to their lack of cooking and eating foods straight from the earth.

Their diet was high in grass-fed-meats, nuts, plant matter, fruits and
berries. In addition they only drank water; not soda, coffee, tang,
etc. They did not suffer from they myriad of chronic ills that affects society today.

Almost every American has had antibiotics at some time in their lives which has killed the normal flora. One of the first things I do it put my patients on a really good probiotic such as Mega Probiotic to help re-establish the normal flora of the intestines.

I'm glad that Americans are finally learning the importance of probiotics and how they can improve ones health.

re: Good Bacteria Boost The Immune Systems of Hospital Patients

The use of probiotics has literally saved my life. Digestive enzymes coupled with HCl only helped marginally. Adding the Probiotics Plus has afforded my healing a miraculous boost!!

With the help of the Metabolic Typing Test from Dr. Mercola and following the Protein Type protocol, I can finally see the promise of a future.

FYI, clicking on the "in my Web store" link shows the ProbioticsPlus out of stock. A call to customer service revealed that a new probiotic will be announced later this week.

Uyusti,

Turquoise

re: Good Bacteria Boost The Immune Systems of Hospital Patients

I agree with Josh, the amount of GI tract toxicity of bad bacteria in the average American is horrific.

This comes DIRECTLY form consuming dumb-downed and nutritionally void calories in our highly processed food chain.

The solution(s)? Check out Dr. Mercola's recommendations, but also consume REAL, wholesome, fresh, nutrient rich, natural food or beverages, high in real fiber, anti oxidants, vitamins, minerals, and preventative antioxidants, etc.

re: Probiotics Boost The Immune Systems of Intensive Care Patients

I would have to say that most americans are walking around with dysbiosis (too much bad bacteria in the gut outwaying the good bacteria). This happens because of stress, poor quality food intake, alcohol, Rx meds, over the counter meds, and on and on.

I have found over the years that sometimes just probiotics alone for someone can make a huge difference. Your GALT (Gut Assoc. Lym Tissue) System in the gut holds 60% of your immune system cells. AS well, the GI system produces aobut 90-95% of the serotonin in the body, not the brain. Take that one to the bank! So think about it, if you are chronically ill, tired, etc (not to say there are not other things going on), try healing your gut and I am sure life will even itself out.
