We got it at Grandma's Lye Soap and really learned a lot there. I never knew what was in regular soap! I personally take a great grapeseed extract supplement from Melaleuca and it really is beneficial for my eyes and my allergies. In addition I take a drink, offered by Young Living, made out of the second fruit you mentioned, goji berries, AKA wolfberries, whihc is called NingXia Red. NingXia Red doesn't only rate high in the ORAC scale but also in the SORAC scale since the berries are not processed at high temperature. Plus, you get the benefit of the ENTIRE fruit - they puree the skin, seeds and pulp.

I highly recommend that people look into taking a good grapeseed extract supplement and a good goji/wolfberry supplement (NingXia wolberries are the best quality). Make sure you know the company you are purchasing your supplements from and know that they have your highest interest in mind; make sure they haven't just jumped on the bandwagon in order to make lots of money.

Live healthy!
Mirdza
Helping People Lead Healthier Lives

re: Grape Seed Extract May Protect Against Skin Cancer

hi, i use a Melaleuca product, called ProvexCV. for me personally it is the best thing i have ever taken. i breathe better, my age spots faded! honest i am still looking and not seeing them. fine veins showing in oct disappeared after 3 months. and my blood results for inflammation (i have rh arthritis) after 10 years of lousy counts...were 2!
and how can i say this so decisively is due to provexcv..well i take nothing but ProvexCV every day! (and the vitamin and minerals from vitality pack but not every day)for 5months. no panadiene at all needed. my liver loves me again!
now, all grape compounds are not the same by a long shot-Melaleuca sources and only uses fresh.ie Not winery waste! Well most of us here in the Mercola community have known about this protective effect for many years.. Just a little more evidence to back up our understanding of antioxidants. It's my understanding that other antioxidants would serve a similar protective role.

I did a little experiment on myself a few years ago with a very high grade, cascading, antioxidant from my favorite supplement company. (It did contain GSE) I figured if this is so good it should prevent a sunburn! I was going to be out on the boat all day - with my shirt off. It was very sunny and a slight burn would have been inevitable, even with my base tan. (I do not wear cancer ~ I mean suntan ~ lotion) I took a regular dose of the antioxidant, which I hadn't been taking every day, with the prediction that I wouldn't burn because of its protective effects.

After a long day I didn't feel the normal effects of that much sun, and was not burned.. I my opinion the antioxidant served a protective role in that outcome.. If I eat a diet low in antioxidants I can tell that I'm more susceptible to sun burning.

It seems that slowly building your base tan and keeping a high antioxidant level is the key to healthy sunbathing!

re: Grape Seed Extract May Protect Against Skin Cancer

Was the UVB exposure similar to what free-range humans experience in natural sunlight? Was the length of exposure comparable to what free-range humans experience over a lifetime? Hairless mice do not have any melanin protection - have you ever seen a suntanned mouse? These are questions that never seem to be answered in these animal studies. Perhaps someone could develop a Human-to-Animal Generalization Scale (HAGS) to allow us to decide the importance of the results in how they relate to human health.

Anyway, we KNOW antioxidants are GOOD, we KNOW free radicals, ROS, oxidized fats, etc are BAD, so why do they insist on torturing poor innocent mice?

re: Grape Seed Extract May Protect Against Skin Cancer

I always wondered as a child growing up in California, why there was little or no skin cancer among grape pickers and ranchers in the blazing harvest suns?...but of course, they ate as they picked, seeds and all.

It's so simple, only a corrupt Pharma industry could spin it to not being perceived as true.

re: Grape Seed Extract May Protect Against Skin Cancer

A 180 lb. human would need .36 - .9 pounds of the (presumably proanthocyanidin-rich) extract they used to get the same level in their system (first order approximation - not taking into account differences in absorption, excretion and metabolism). See the following.

"The new study, led by Santosh Katiyar, supplemented the diet (AIN76A) of SKH-1 hairless mice with grape seed proanthocyanidins (0.2 and 0.5 per cent, w/w) and exposed them to UVB (180 mJ/cm2) radiation to induce skin cancer...
