"The governor of Washington state is scheduled to sign legislation today to ban flame retardants called PBDEs in furniture, televisions, and computers in the state. This is despite the more than $220,000 the chemical industry has spent since 2005 to defeat the legislation. At a time when the federal government is largely ineffectual in regulating long-used but potentially dangerous industrial chemicals, the Washington ban could be the beginning of the end for PBDEs across the nation. 'The industry that makes deca and PBDEs is freaking out because they lost so severely in Washington state and other states will follow,' said a spokeswoman for the Washington Toxics Coalition. 'It really is a message from Washington state and policymakers that we won't accept chemicals that build up in our bodies and our children.'"

Now I know every night I'm getting flame retardent chemical exposure. This is frightening and disappointing since I really enjoy sleeping on it.

The LAWS have to be CHANGED, email/write your reps in the Senate and House to make new legislation to change these laws.

I have just recently begun to buy 100% pure organic cotton clothing and bedding. I never realized how wonderful it is or what I had been missing. I breathe better, have less skin irritation and feel good about purchasing materials from (non child labor sources). I want to start buying organic clothing for my grandsons as well. It is truly amazing how many clothing products have harmful chemicals and dyes in them.

Your right Russ, the estrogen mimics in plastics are affecting the reproductive organs. Dr. John Lee was a leading researcher in the hormone field, and speaks of this problem. He even goes as far as to say that within the next 2 generations or so the human race will mostly be sterile if we continue down this path.

Flame retardant deadly chemicals on products is NOT a new entity. This has been around for several decades. When it first came out, we parents thought it was a great idea. Why you say? Because terrible accidents were occuring. Our children would get near heat or flames and their clothes would burst into flames. Little did we know that there were deadly chemicals in the fabric. Production companies need to move back to all cotton fabrics with a all natural - homeopathic resistence in fabrics. Not man-made deadly chemicals. Materials should also be all natural or organic. They should also not charge so much, that most people cannot afford them.

I always favoured more natural furnishings – leather couch, wood etc, long before I knew anything about these chemicals because they give the house a nicer “feel”. Aside from the nasty chemicals that these artificial furnishings put out, they also suck the negative (good) ions from the air which has many detrimental effects. I keep a Himalayan rock salt lamp (natural negative ionizer) next to my computer to offset its harmful effects.

I know when my handicapped child was born he could not have any synthetic material around him at all or he would break out in a rash. It was nearly impossible back then to find 100% cotton, untreated baby clothes. It has become a lot easier since then. But on childrens clothes they are treated with flame retardant material unless otherwise marked.

Furniture, TV's and computers are all replaceable items but the long term effect of flame retardents, PBDE's on human health may not be reversible. As awareness grows, as in the organic movement, manufacturers will have to provide us with a chemical free alternative. The next mattress I purchase will be an organic one. I try to purchase only products from an eco-friendly, truly "green", sustainable companies. We need to go back to quality products made from real materials (copper vs. stainless steel or wood vs. plastic). They are not only better for you and the environment but they also last longer! There was life before plastic, teflon and flame retardents.

This Chemical and Technological Revolution that we have been experiencing will ultimately destroy our planet and life as we know it, unless change is mandated by "we the people". Let your voice be heard, once again, speak with your dollars, email congress and spread the news!

Maybe they use this in flame retardant clothing, mostly for kids I think. Also, blankets, and maybe sheets. I'm concerned about direct skin contact. I alreafy started buying 100% cotton, and now I'd better look out for this, too. I hope the manufactureres have to state that it is flame retardant. Even if they don't have to, they probably do as a selling point.

There are even several reports out now of sterility in male born children from their mother's exposure to plastics not only in water bottles, but regular plastic packing of food.

Once again, the less processed, and the less plastic packaging, the better for YOUR health.

I would say the best rec would be to use stainless steal pots and pans and grill only when needed. But at the same time, there are many pieces to the healing puzzle. If you are living all the other peices (handling stress, water, sleep, exercise, organic food, etc), hopefully your body will able to detoxify this to a certain extent. I educate clients that unfortunately there are some stressors (evnironmental, chemical, etc) that we just can't truely get away from. YOu can lessen the amount of exposure, but as long as you are living every other piece to the puzzle, these other stressors might not have such a negative effect on you.
