Does anyone know if water softeners, which were once good, then bad, are now good or not? Would they eliminate fluoride, and maybe fortuitously drugs too? Do they have a downside besides cost? Thanks! Duane

After 6 months of research, I found a water purifier that I just love. It is a reverse osmosis system and has been approved and tested by the National Sanitation Association. It takes everything out of the water and I am grateful to have pure, clean water to drink. No more chemicals, hormones, diseases, etc. The research was worth it.

It definitely IS time to take control of our health, as Dr. Mercola states. Unfortunately our oceans, rivers and lakes are very contaminated. We need to help people be aware of this. Plus, we need to use products that aren't contaminating our waters. We need to be aware of the detergents we use, the shampoos we use - everything we use in our homes! Everything gets washed down the drain and goes into the waters. We dont' want them polluted - we need to stop using products that have chemicals in them. That includes drugs as well - it doesn't matter whether they are prescripition, OTC or illegal drugs. Drugs are chemicals that are hurting our bodies and our environment. Say "no" to all drugs! We need to take control of our health!

This isn't a comment, but actually a question. How do you feel about drinking only distilled water? I have a distiller and used it for over a year until I read that drinking distilled water on a continual basis was not good for you. The minerals removed in the distilling process are needed by our body and without them we would be deficient. Please comment. Thank you.

Don't forget antibiotics. I don't know if antibiotics have been found at the same levels as the other drugs mentioned, but I've definitely read papers that have found measurable levels of antibiotics in the environment. I think the main source was agricultural. Another reason to go organic.

This is exactly why I buy my drinking and cookng water from a source outside of the municipal water supply. I hated the fluoride, chlorine and other chemicals added by the city. I had mine tested a while back and my tap water was at the upper limits max. No wonder my icemaker ice cubes tasted and smelled so strange.

I am also reminded of the baby alligator craze in this country some thirty odd years ago. Many people just flushed them down the toilet or transplanted them to a local pond, lake or river when they suddenly realized the ground hugging, eat anything alive suckers continued growing!

I always thought this explained why some of the municipal water workers went missing!

The concept of bio-magnification is seldom mentioned in relation to environmental toxins. Yet it's impact is staggering.

The average person considers that dilution of a substance renders it harmless or less harmful. If we lived in a linear system where things had an end and a beginning that never met, they would probably be correct. But our planet is a closed circle... what we send out comes back to us. Amplified many, many times.

In Clear Lake, California, DDD was sprayed at a dilution of 1part to every 50,000,000 parts water to eradicate a gnat that was annoying fishermen (what an attitude we display sometimes!). Then fish and birds started showing up dead in the water... and it was found that the levels of DDD were increasing in each consumer up the food-chain. Plankton contained 250x the concentration; carnivorous fish that ate the plankton eating fish contained 125,000x...

So as we're at the top of almost all food-chains, it's high time we got out of our "it's only a tiny amount - it won't do any harm" comfort zones.

Food-standard organic is the only long-term viable option for personal care / beauty products (www.miorganics.ie is one option for you). And whole-istic, natural approaches are the only long-term viable health care option.

Anything less will - literally - come back to haunt us. Or our children.

I wonder how many of those drugs get through the filter. I heard that hormones, as in the ones found in birth control pills, do get pass the system.

My husband and I plan on selling our house and building a new one in the near future and it will include a whole house water filter system. However, I would like to know if a reverse osmosis system would get rid of these types of contaminants.

I had a reverse osmosis water filter installed when I learned the truth about fluoride. It's not just left over medicines being flushed down the toilet; every medicine being taken by every person ends up in the water supply because the body excretes it via urine and feces, and because the molecules are synthetic they cannot be broken down. Now scientists are very concerned that during the Chicken Little flu epidemic, large amounts of the active metabolite of Tamiflu will enter the water supplies; they stated:

“Owing to the apparent recalcitrance of OC [Tamiflu metabolite] in sewage treatment works, widespread use of Tamiflu during an influenza pandemic also poses a potentially significant, uncharacterized, ecotoxicologic risk in each affected nation's waterways [my emphasis].”[1]

While people quite rightly worry about things like pesticides in the environment, I find the accumulation of these toxic drugs somewhat more ominous.

I and my family, including my animals have been consuming double filter water and steamed distilled water for the past 3 years. We purchase our steamed water at the Better health store and we use the Culligan filter system.

How do we consume double filter water you ask? We take a large class or large measuring class and fill it up with filter water from our sink, then we take this water and fill up a filter container that we place in the refrig. There-fore, we have double filter water.

Being an apartment dweller, I am unable to use a better system. But taking a daily shower in a portable filter system, Culligan, has made a mass difference in our systems.

Please stay away from all plastics you would store or consume liquid and food in.

Clean water is something I feel incredibly passionate about. There is a very large amount of chlorine in the tap water where I live. It has caused a lot of skin problems as well as affecting my gastrointestinal tract. I have installed a water filter for drinking and cooking and use a de-chlorinator ball(to remove the chlorine from the bath water) for bathing. I drink bottled water (Fiji). I happen to believe that the large amount of chlorine in water contributes to the destruction of the beneficial bacteria in our intestinal tracts. A good probiotic helps, but getting rid of the chlorine is essential for healing for those who have crohn's, ulcers, diverticulitis, etc.
