I think I have posted before on the many theories of how one gets this terrible disease. I have worked in many nursing homes doing OT rehab with these people. For one, they are the most beatiful people in the world, but at the same time it is tough to see the strugge and deterioration of the human person. I can tell you first hand that they might loose the human, but they do not loose the soul.

As Russ said, living a life of health and vitality we can only hope these days will prevent diseases such as this. I think it was about 100 years ago when Dr. Alzheimer "invented" this disease. I just watch a special on this, its origins, etc on PBS. The researchers said there about 14 million people today that had this disease and our society spends about 100 billion dollars a year on it. I am not sure, but I remeber them saying that it is either catching up with or surpassing heart disease, cancer and AIDS.

From what I have read, some more holistic researches say it can happen from chronic dehydration and/or chronic low levels of DHEA in the body.

Russ, I could not agree with you more. However, having worked in nursing homes you really can not give anything other than FDA approved poisons as prescribed by the MD. Even nutritional supplements had to be prescribed and if you were found discussing them with a patient or their family your job could be over.

There is clearly culling, or euthanasia, going on, in the public funding of senior homes among the 'wards' of the state(s) throughout the USA...just ask any worker in these BLEAK HOUSES.
