To rely and blindly trust others is a recipe for disaster. I do not, and will not, rely on others to teach my children about health and nutrition. My daughter often comes home from school and tells me the bad food that was offered at lunch time. She refuses the pasteurized milk, grain foods, and others. She tries hard to eat right by eating vegetables, fruits, meats, and taking water with her to school every day. By the way, she is only 7 years old. A healthy 7, that is. She also shares her knowledge with her friends (planting seeds). If all parents could teach their children to eat properly, the schools would have to change their menus to prevent waste.

re: U.S. Congress Continues to Wobble on Childhood Obesity

Mercola saved the best for last: "assume responsibility for the obesity epidemic in your own home."

Boy, if the gov't could stick to what the Constitution empowers them to do... With so many competing theories of nutrition - some diametrically opposed - how is the gov't to be trusted to get it right, even if they were honest brokers? Then throw in the financial interests (see Russ Bianchi's comment). The federal gov't imposes one-size-fits-all solutions. Maximum decision-making should be left to the individual and family, next to local gov'ts, then the state, and the absolute minimum necessitated by the Constitution to the Federal Gov't. The problem is people who think they know what's best for everybody want to impose it at the highest level of gov't. Then when they get it wrong (almost always?), it's almost impossible to fix.

re: U.S. Congress Continues to Wobble on Childhood Obesity

I completely agree with Dr. Mercola's admonition to "take matters into your own hands". The issue of childhood obesity begins at home and is supported or exacerbated by outside sources. Parents who want their children to be happy and healthy must take the neccessary steps to ensure that their little ones are getting organic whole foods at home. In addition to this, though, parents must also educate their children about the fundamentals of proper nutrition. If keeping kids healthy and fit means sending them to school with a healthy lunch, then by all means parents must do so. Schools are filled with toxic food choices and lunchrooms peddle and over-abundance of sugars, coloring and chemicals. There are still fast food choices available in some cafeterias. So take Dr. Mercola's advice and don't wait for the government to save you children from a life of obesity!

re: U.S. Congress Continues to Wobble on Childhood Obesity

Read FAT LAND by Greg Critser, it spells out in simple to understand language, how the entire food and beverage chain has systematically been dumb-downed by Congress, though the CFR and FDA and annual Farm Bill in subsidies, via massive lobbying efforts through Agribusiness, Big Prepared Food, and Big Soda to the point is without a doubt HARMING the overall US population; in obesity, diabetes, hypoglycemia, cancer and heart disease.

Eat from the center isles of any supermarket, of unlabeled food service or fast food, at your own peril!
