The gist of his advice seems to be that the ratio of unsaturated to saturated fats is more important to the toxicity of linoleic and linolenic acids, along with the ratio of oxidants to antioxidants. Unsaturated fats are essential for cancer and are immune suppressants. Since they are unavoidable in the diet, their essentiality is questioned. Dr. Peat's articles are all interrelated and focus on the importance of proper thyroid function, and the role that unsaturated fats play in the suppression of thyroid function. His article on Coconut Oil further points out the importance of short and medium chain tryglicerides to oppose the long chain type. For women, especially, the articles on hormones are also very beneficial.

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

Duane, thanks for even more info on EFA. I think I am grasping it better now. Like most newbies, I guess I thought it would only be found in nuts, unhydrogenated nut butter and the like, and needed to be supplemented. I mean, being "essential" and all.
Thanks for noticing my name misspelling. I had upped the therapy, since it added to my feelings of inconsequence and all, so....ok, kidding. Maybe I need a cool moniker (love the WitchDoctor). SlipSlapSloppyGirl? No, too many questions. Gotta check out the link you posted, but first must go earn a living.

Cathy, your "research" post was too research-y for my little brain. Break it down for the slow chick.

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

Reesacat: rubbed oil into the back on my hand--wow! My only concern, I guess, would be using it on my body exclusively and not being able to get dressed right away. Otherwise, what a great moisturizer! I'm glad, too, I'm not the only one who thought coconut oil was...uh...more oily.

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

Duane, I instantly liked you too! You seem not only informed, but not too much of a zealot. (And, no, a zealot is not always a bad thing, I guess, if you're sure you're right, but who is? My foray into nutrition seems to always be surprising me, as I find many things that I thought were good to be just the opposite, and the "bad" to be good). You are helping me sort help from hype, and just seem rational, laid back and smart. I like that in an anonymous, faceless computer-poster. :)

And Cathy (looked up your real name), thanks for not adding to my "silly" feelings. Bonkers just came out. I'm an original Georgia girl with a Yankee mom, so not sure from what dialect that originated, but what's a pommie girl?

Not sure how long this post or site, or thread, or whatever you call it is going to stay viable (I kind of fell into this game after delving into Mercola's stuff) but I would love to know what a pom is. :) Shel

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

Duane, I will try the coconut oil today (my teenage son should be able to open it) and take a tablespoon. Interesting stuff about the red palm oil--I've never seen it. So, I guess Mary Enig has it all over the Eat Right For Your Type book, huh?

I'll have to see if I can find out what she espouses. I'll look on the web, I don't imagine I will buy any books anytime soon. This nutrition thing is like a fascinating bottomless pit.

Thanks for the thorough explanation on 6's and 3's, but one more question--the linoleic (or is it linolenic?) are stored and don't need to be supplied anymore, much less daily? Just eat saturated and forget about adding olive oil or nuts? (Don't run marathons, don't need a pauch, thank you very much). Also, spray baking pans, or custard pans, avoiding greasy fingers or a wasted paper towel, ya know? But I bet you're right. I still need to re-open that bad-boy tub to take a better gander. I guess when you stir it up it's not as liquid-y as it first appeared.

Like I said earlier, I do not want to fiddle with opening that monster tub every day. I'm not kidding when I say I am having trouble. Maybe a pour bottle that I could refill periodically with a funnel....?

And I think I'll ignore D'Adamo...thanks.

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

So, PPARGammagirl, you're sort of saying I may be lacking something to digest this stuff that is otherwise great for everybody--but also, that maybe the dammo guy, or whatever his name was, is not the savviest bear in the woods?

And Duane, you, sweetheart, will buy it from me even opened. Well, here's a funny. I opened it, cutting all along the little arrows, broke a sweat and developed gorgeous arm muscles, smelled its wonderful sweet aroma, then sealed it back up and am waiting for someone strong enough to open it again to happen by! Honestly! I bought a new spray bottle, because if I can finagle some guy off the street to pop open the darn thing, I was going to fill it and use from there. Never got to taste it, even, but love that it stays so well-sealed.

How's the book reading coming? Shall I live, or die a martyr to the search for elusive good health? So, it seems, we might benefit from cooking with stable fats like butter and coconut, and eating unprocessed (raw) nuts, and cold-pressed olive oil on salads, right? With just a little omega 3?

Now, I see Bridestein references a blood type diet that says I, a type O blood person, should never eat coconut oil. And yet my first purchase from Mercola.com came 2 days ago, a shelf-stable (what was it, 5yrs.?) gallon of coconut oil. 76$ bucks, and I'm on a super-limited budget, but I am trying to do the right thing.

help.

re: Simple Fat Change Radically Improves Mental and Physical Health

I have skin issues, sometimes severe, when I consume Carlsons cod liver or fish oil, krill oil, or coconut oil. don't have any citations - I guess the next step would be to ask him
for them) showing that although there are short-term health benefits of
taking extra omega-3 fatty acids, beyond the short term they actually
increase inflammation in the body. This is a disturbing
implication and I wondered if anyone has knowledge of these studies, or
of the longer-term affects of omega-3's on inflammation?
Now get this - this includes GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES. Yep, you heard right - doctors are telling these patients not to eat one of the healthiest foods on the planet. But wait, it gets worse - soybean oil is HIGHER IN VITAMIN K than any other food known to mankind, serving per serving, but doctors NEVER tell their patients to stop eating it. Quite the opposite, they tell their patients to EAT vegetable oil, which is ALWAYS soybean oil if it's actually labeled "vegetable oil" (other types of vegetable oils are labeled by the actual type of oil they are, such as peanut, canola, corn, etc.) If I live to be a hundred, I will never, ever understand this.
