He invariably found that those living long and healthy lives were fed raw meaty bones and leftovers (not leftover takeaway, but proper people food).

It's been my observation that dogs are omnivores. Dad had a greyhound that would gorge itself on grapes. I've seen foxes eating blackberries when in season. Often the first thing that wolves/foxes eat from a herbivorous kill is the contents of the stomach. To simulate that my dogs sometimes get blended raw vegetables.

Another of his ideas is about the "balanced" diet
was that it should be balanced over some time (a few weeks), rather than every meal.

(Something else that's amazing about dogs is their capacity, provided they've got their internal flora functioning, to eat meat that is literally green and not suffer a moments illness from it. In fact they seek it out).

Back on topic, I never even considered that cheap gluten would make it into the food supply. Don't know why I never considered it, but it's seriously scary.

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

where do people get the ide dogs are omnivores? because they chew on grass once in a while?

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

A few years ago I researched Human Grade Pet Foods for my cats. The best one I found was Innova. Their EVO brand is fantastic. They have a website if you are interested. Otherwise, if you do not have the time to cook for your pets, please find a commercially prepared human food grade pet food for them. I think that the kosher laws have a dual benefit. They are primarily spiritual for Jews but they have health benefits as well. For non-Jews they are non-binding but the rules given to Noah apply and while those don't define the species that are "clean" or not, they do say not to eat blood or carrion. So I think it's interesting that the studies cited were done on hogs.
People, hogs and shellfish as well as a few bottom feeders like catfish and some others, i.e. swordfish, shark, eels are NOT food. They never were. Stop feeding on garbage disposals . You'll feel better and in time you won't miss all that yummy salami, pepperoni, gumbo and eel sushi.

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

Doc mercola..i cant wait for your info resulting from your team up with the vet..for the last 6 months ive been reading your newsletter/etc,and wondering what i can do to help my 2 dogs health as well..even though ive been paying more for my dietary changes im feeling better than ive felt in years..thank you and i look forward to more articles for both myself and my pets
belegost

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

This country's love affair with cheap slave/prison labor goods from China is a disgrace and this sad sad episode is only one example of it. We boycott Cuba, a country without the power to harm us in any way, and deal hand in glove with China. We don't need more oversight of Chinese imports, well, actually we do need more oversight of our foodstuffs, but not just China. What we need is a law mandating that the source of all food additives that are not American be clearly stated on the ingredient labels. This will give consumers the option of not buying Chinese imported food. I personally don't buy consumer items made in China and clear "made in" labels on clothing and appliances make this an easy choice. Food items in the stores are clearly marked as to source, for instance, grapes marked organic but coming from Mexico are something I avoid. Last year I bought garlic and when I got home realized the label said it was a product of China. I took it back to the store. Individual consumers have the power to change the way the big dogs of industry do things, because our dollars are our votes, but that power is useless if we don't exercise it.

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Comment does not pertain to the topic of the article or does not provide value or insight to the discussion. Human greed, both on the Chinese side and the US side. The Chinese will try to get a higher profit with false foodstuffs and the US firms are willing to buy the cheapest in order to compete(make more money).

You reap what you sow. Buy cheap and you can get not so nice results. We give away jobs and buy poison abroad from a country that does not have openess as a history. Difficult, what?

Another aspect is personal responsibility. Government cannot do all for
each one of us. It is important that we do a little investigation ourselves. Maybe that which is made in North America or other lands with transparent manufacturing processeses is better to buy than from a land that is not well known for openess and honesty.

re: Can the Pet Food Calamity Also Harm You?

I read in the Kansas City Star that some of the contaminated dog food has been sold as salvage to feed chickens and pigs... in the US! claims the FDA.

This is an outrage! I found this small article on page 2 (E2) of the Business weekly section on the Kansas City Star on Sunday, May 6, 2007. This should be headline news!

I can guarantee I won't be eating anything but organic from this point forward.

And in the same newspaper/same date, in the Health section page 14 (A14), there is an article about diethylene glycol being sold as glycerin from China. Diethylene glycol is the primary ingredient used in anti-freeze. It kills people and animals! And it has been added to cough syrups, drugs, food, etc. The FDA has issued a warning to drugmakers and suppliers to be 'especially vigilant' in watching for diethylene glycol and calledd for all glycerin to be tested.

This is whacked.
