I can't find anything on your website about the DANGERS of flourescent bulbs....in the disposal of them. What I'm hearing is that they are not safe to just place them in the garbage and then on to landfills, that they contain very harmful mercury....can you please address this Dr. Mercola...or anyone?

I would like to know Dr. Mercola's understanding on how the constant flickering of these lights correlate to ocular migraines. I suffer with ocular migraines and more so at home than any where else. My dh changed over all our lights with CFL's around Christmas and being a SAHM where I am at home more than any other place I can tell you I have suffered terribly this winter with ocular migraines. In contrast, when I leave on a trip and stay in a hotel room etc I am not sick with ocular migraines. For people in my situation there has got to be a better alternative. Not to mention having four little one's at home does not make me very eager to have one of these mercury filled bombs ready to go off at any moment in my home! As for our home we are banning all types of CFL's for the SAKE of our health.

I guess I am an idiot for getting rid of my mercury thermometer years ago when I was informed it was dangerous due to the small amount of mercury in it. I haven't had one for years like many other concerned parents I know of.

Yes, I do worry about being hurt or killed in a car accident. It's not a pleasant thought. Why would I want to have this worry and unpleasant thought in my head at home due to having mercury bulbs all over the house.

I guess if you have boys at home you should steer clear of these bulbs...because my boys have busted a few bulbs let me tell you~!

I am also not for the status quo with the amount of energy our current bulbs use. Isn't there a safer alternative Dr. Mercola, such as LED bulbs?

To find bulbs that specifically state they give out UVB rays, I googled "full spectrum bulbs and UVB rays" & found that they are available for reptile habitat replication & are relatively less expensive than the coiled bulbs we are seeing advertised here & now sold in stores. It is said they need to be 5-10% UVB & should be replaced at regular intervals, as the UVB tends to decrease over time. Nothing said about how long so I plan to ask a pet supply person about that. Hope it's helpful to all.

Thanks for the info' about the amount of Mercury, Dr Mercola, & about cleanup from all who posted that. It puts things more in perspective for me.

actually called him after reading it, in the early 80's, he was in FL I think, seemed aged, but very nice, open. Made sense... Why do certain people nearly live all day in the sun? There were many interesting studies... I think it was mink growers who kept having male offspring, switched to full spectrum lighting and got right back to 50/50, etc. Normal sun spectrum entering the eye and upon the skin.

With the cost of these bulbs at 6 for $10 why not? We are pretty much 100% flourescent now with the exception of night lights. What could be easier for a family with kids who do not always remember to turn off the lights?

Hi, I live in the UK and Dr Ms bulbs wont fit in my light fittings, so have bought as close as i could (just 2) they are very bright, but do make colours seem better. Although having just read this article

Mercury??? please explain, also, on another post it states that UV needed for vit D production is no way near enough .Please help

I have had problems with flourescent lights since I was a kid, due to the flickering and low level sounds of the lights, as well as high frequency sounds from defective ones.

I bought some of the small incandescent replacement bulbs for my bedroom, but found it to make me tense when I had the lights on.

I suspect that these lightbulbs, full spectrum or not, are going to be a problem, and I think the ultimate solution to this problem will be a LED form of lighting system similar to those used in flashlights.

CFL's are a joke. They do not help lower peak-demand and so will not
reduce the number of power plants required. They are all made overseas so will reduce jobs in North America and they will spread Mercury all over the environment. The only way to stop this is the force all sellers of CFL's to except returns and properly dispose of them. We all know this is not going to happen.

In the 1980s there was a school district in Canada which changed out ALL its fluorescent bulbs for a healthier option. They found that the fluorescents were causing more missed days of school, poorer concentration and a host of ills - via a scientific study. I don't remember the publication, and tried to search the internet but it was pretty much pre-internet.

I think the global warming craze and banning of incandescent is pushing America in an unhealthy direction, lighting wise.

More practical steps to take? Make sure your home is as "light" friendly as you can make it. Put light colors on the walls. Don't block windows with blinds or curtains if possible. That way you can keep the lights off during the day and save electricity. Also, less lights at night will be required.

Our house was stripped of all its dark paneling and dark cupboards and repainted to let the light reflect through the rooms. Remove the texture from ceilings and walls - it is a light sucker. Make the ceilings smooth and paint them a light reflecting semi-gloss white. Our house went from cave to bright and airy with these changes, resulting in lots of saved electricity trying to light the place.

I'm now going to check out full spectrum lighting - but make sure it is mercury free before buying it. I'm not going to buy any more CFLs to harm the health of my family just to make Al Gore happy. There are many other things we can do. I probably save more money hanging my laundry to dry (family of 6) than I would replacing the light bulbs, and it is a much healthier option. Let's do what we can to conserve, but do it in a healthy way.

Mercury isn't that hard to clean up. One does not need to use HAZMAT
pros. Mercury evaporates at 70 degrees f. If the temp is below that there's no chance of breathing it and hopefully one is wise enough to not ingest it. Cut a paper plate in half and scoop it up and put it in a ziplock. Someone else might have an even better method.
