I don't celebrate Independence Day (for reasons out of topic) so fireworks are especially unnecessary to me. They're loud and extremely dangerous: you have to be careful not to blow your hand off.

OK, what about the green house emissions in China from filthy coal/diesel burning plants (China is now the Number One producer of air pollutants in the world - a fact Al Gore manages to forget)?

And NO, the Chinese three gorge dam hydro electric production will not curb the older methods of power & pollution, in anyone reading this commentary's lifetime.

Ever see (or smell) the air over New Delhi, Madras, or Calcutta, India during the dry season?

What about the semipermanent layer of ethanol smog (cane sugar conversion which is CLEANER than the corn ethanol proposed for the USA, at taxpayer massive subsidies) over San Pablo, Brazil?

What about airline plane emissions daily emitted globally (other than Richard Branson being slightly ahead of the curve on this one)?

The muck that typically is always over Los Angeles & Mexico City from gasoline auto emissions?

Explosions from warfare (at last count about 43 major wars regionally or globally that are on going?

Are fire works necessary? No.

Do we have bigger problems than fireworks? Yes.

Do we need to address & correct all of the listed above? Yes.

Is the solution, newly spun, "clean" nuclear? NO!

Remember the PR positioned 'new generation' nuclear is only the same old one, that is inefficient/dangerous/expensive.

Fast breeder/fission reactors, to arrived at little radioactive waste, have intentionally been stalled or non funded, to try to cram dirty nuclear back into the energy mix.

Sun, wave, geothermal, hydrogen, & wind ALL work, with no pollution, but existing energy companies with vested interests in old & polluting oil based technologies, haven't figured out out how to meter them for an ROI in comparison to their current RAPE margins, by restricting, artificially, refining capacities, against demand, to jack up retail consumer prices.
