This area (pittsburgh ftl) has the worst doctors I have ever seen and I get weird looks and asked about 100 questions when I say what my diet is. It isn't really that special. I eat all whole foods (peppers, lettuce, tomato etc), chicken, turkey, and fruit. I try to juice some vegetables too.

I told my doctor 3 weeks ago that I no longer eat processed foods and she told me that I should eat them. I am not kidding. She asked me why I would choose such a diet. My reply to her was because I want to be healthy. She looked at me like I was an alien. I guess to fit in America you need to be 300 lbs. I bet she doesn't even ask her fat patients what they eat, but a pretty, tall, thin woman gets harassed. I am sick of it.

Another one of my doctors told me that I should eat more desserts at dinner. =/ What is wrong with doctors?

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

I am a retired ballerina and never had weight problems. When I moved from Germany to Texas (yes everything is bigger haha) I gained 20 pounds. I was surprised, then I haven't changed my eating, portions or whatever... so I started to search, and exactly found what everybody is saying, sugar sugar sugar... I have never seen so much sugar in food, like milk, bread and and and... so I started to bake my own bread, make yogurt, switched to organic soymilk without added sugar?..the list can go on. When I shop I watch the ingredients, now I have my perfect weight again. But still there is something else, I am a racebiker and have to fuel on my rides, has anybody seen what bad stuff is in the bars? My gym 24hours tried to sell me one of there bars, the guy insured me, there is much less sugar, ye right, what about sugaralcohol... I even find Aspartame in health products.
For me, I have one day in the week, where I make my own power bars and power drinks, and I wonder, if all this is save from hidden bad stuff.

Therese

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

Sugar, besides displacing healthy calories, and causing largely insulin driven disease states, has another problem. It is an anti-nutrient. Why do I say this? The body has to use up vital nutrients in converting it to glucose, producing insulin, pumping sugar into cells, burning the sugar in multiple steps for energy, converting it to glycogen, burning said glycogen, converting it to triglycerides, mobilizing and burning said triglycerides (does that involve a ketone step, too?). Every step in it's myriad and multi-step journeys use up the body's nutrients. This is stuff I've read but am not expert in, so I outlined it generally. Perhaps others can elucidate some of the nutrients, of which I know there are many, that get consumed. Oh, and then the body has to do something with the insulin after it's done it's job. Then add the damage, and subsequent repair processes necessary, due to prolonged elevated insulin exposure. And how about glycation end-products, with proteins and fats, I believe. Yikes! Sugar is a MAJOR antinutrient! That means instead of adding nutrients, or even just being neutral, it consumes many nutrients leaving you more depleted than before. Did I get anything wrong? Some oxidation/reduction steps, maybe? Oh, yeah - disposal of waste products from all of the above, etc., etc., etc. (said like Yul Brynner in The King and I.)

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

I've got all of that data here and never thought to look at that relationship. Who would have guessed.

Amanda

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Comment does not pertain to the topic of the article or does not provide value or insight to the discussion. Please list them so I can try them out! It's one thing to complain about them, so if no cereal then please list an alternative typical breakfast. Based on the number of hits for Lucy's recipes we need more posts of what people eat on a regular basis, and breakfast is one of the least likely meals to be changed frequently.
I know it is an oxymoron to say a good cereal, but my preference is in no particular order or preference;
Uncle Sam's
Wheetabix
Wheaties
Life
Put some hand picked, locally grown (backyard) raisins, raw milk and yes a little pasteurized whipping cream (raw cream $10/pint) with some highly refined, crystalized white sugar (<2 teaspoons). Great way for me to start the day with a double espresso. I'm a carb type and it works wonders for me.
Don't bash on my post unless you honestly post your typical workday breakfast. Don't be shy, that means moderators and Dr.Mercola too!

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

Now isn't that a kick in the head? I did not know that the sugar content of so-called "unsweetened" cereals had been increased since I was a kid - what is wrong with these manufacturers? Are they doing it because Americans, with their sugar-burdened taste buds, can't taste smaller amounts of sugar anymore and won't buy cereals with less sugar?

I was aware that there is too much sugar in these cereals, because I read labels fanatically, and my kids were never allowed cereals that had huge amounts of sugar and almost no fiber, including seemingly innocent varieties such as rice krispies, but the average ignorant citizen who believes the television ads about "heart health" yada yada yada is not going to know this.

What hope is there when even the WIC program allows junk cereals, like sugar-coated Frosted Mini-Wheats, but not unadulterated Shredded Wheat, and the USDA Food Pyramid still recommends more grain and other starchy food than most people can tolerate?

I'm very sad and worried for my childrens' and grandchildrens' generations.

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

In additional to cancer triggering refined sugars (cane or beet sucrose, corn dextrose, HFCS, crystalline fructose, falsely/illegally labeled refined sucrose as 'evaporated cane juice', etc.), that can also lead to hypoglycemia, Syndrome X, diabetes, cardio vascular disease, & obesity, even claims of vitamin & minerals fortification are a FRAUD (in terms of ANY bioavailability, or absorbability).

Among MANY real (non urban legend) breakfast cereal stories, I have personally heard, seen, or witnessed, is the one about three sources of CALCIUM for fortification in a breakfast cereal targeting bone needs for women. There were three sources considered: ground rock or chalk (calcium carbonate), ground oyster shells, or actually absorbable dairy derived calcium.

Which one is still in that cereal brand? Ground chalk at a 'window dressing' (trace amounts) levels.

When the corporate buyer was asked why they were not using the best one (dairy) at a real dosage level, he replied: "Cost".

When further pressed what would happen if the public found out? He replied, "Maybe we'll switch".

False representations in children's Saturday morning, or weekday afternoon, TV programming, that these cereal brands "are part of a this complete breakfast" (showing an image of a bowl of their glorified puffed sugar & refined grains, next to real fruit, eggs, toast, a pitcher of milk, or real orange juice,) deceptively trying to fool the children into thinking any of these brands are wholesome, is EVIL.

This is but one example of why 'cereal is NOT for breakfast anymore' & why America has voted with their wallets & feet to healthier, or different, options.

Such options include Starbuck's for a caffeine hit, or a much healthier energy/meal replacement bar, like Dr. Mercola's Cocoa Cassava Bars, that are: 'Truly Delicious & Absolutely Nutritious(TM)!

re: Processed Foods Are Even Sweeter Than You Think

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Comment does not pertain to the topic of the article or does not provide value or insight to the discussion. They add lots of various sugars and gluten (Which interact with the brain to create gluteomorphines. Which when you are low or try to come off, you essentially have withdrawals. Hence you always want these foods.) to keep you addicted to these foods. As well, the lower quality the food, the more it is dead and processed, the more they have to add and do to it to make it eatable!
