Alcohol has provided me with peace of mind, regardless of its lack of health benefits. Life is something I have never understood and alcohol when called upon has brought me relief.

The mind needs to be as peaceful and fit as well as the body.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

I agree with garya. The mindset as well as 'wine production' technologies were different back then. At worst, "wine" was slightly fermented grape juice because it was sitting around for a while, probably 0.5 to 1.0 % like "non-alcoholic" beer.

The bible states this clearly about grapes:

"Drink the pure blood of the grape" [Deuteronomy 32:14]

Of course the bible is sometimes vague since the "wine" inference goes both ways:

"Do not drink wine nor strong drink..." [Leviticus 10:9]

This probably refers to strongly fermented liquors made for the sole purpose of getting drunk. A passage from Ephesians seems to verify moderation in it's consumption:

"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the spirit." [Ephesians 5:18]

Almost sounds like an emotional freedom technique...

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

what does the bible really say about alcohol?

http://www.amazingfacts.org/items/Read_Media.asp?ID=471

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

ever noticed how some people drink(no excessivly ofcourse) and seem to act normally and not impaired at all?
while others get goofy from the first drink.

theres a theory that some of these so called alcoholics are merely self-medicating bi-polars. this ofcourse is not an excuse to consume a body harming(iuf not mind-harming) substance, but it offers good insight into possible causes.

just something to think about.

p.s. the monkeys are very funny and cute, though id hate to see them with a hangover Excess of food WILL kill you early. Bad food, especially.

What is "alcohol"? How many people underreport their usage?

Anyway, we know, more or less, how much is too much.

Personally, I think that it's the freedom. The freedom to have a beer for lunch, for instance.

OK, if you don't feel like it, if you didn't get quite enough sleep last night and have a busy afternoon at the office ahead of you, or even if you did get enough sleep and you just don't feel like it, or don't want it - more power to you.

But I think it's the freedom. The freedom to drink a beer. No theories, no religions, no nothing stands between me and my freedom to drink a beer. A beer. "A" meaning "one". Not ten. On a beautiful summer afternoon. Life may only come around once in a while.

But it's also the freedom to not drink it. Ultimately, the question that comes up for me is what can I do to imitate, to achieve the same positive heart-healthy benefits that some of these studies attribute to moderate consumption of alcohol, without consuming any of it?

We need more of these types of statistics, or research projects. It's not whether or not alcohol in moderation is good for you, it's how you can achieve those same "good for you" affects without it. Then, you have TRUE freedom - the freedom to choose moderation, or the freedom to choose to not ingest that particular substance.

But that also means that you should have the freedom to drink A (one) beer, and suffer any consequences from doing that. And not have your employer or anyone else tell you that you need to wait until you get home. "A", is key. One. Not ten. Ten at home is OK, or pints of ice cream -- but one at noon will get you fired. That's not freedom.

We need to re-think all of this, and make INFORMED choices. Choices that reflect our love for ourselves and our fellow human beings, and a deep awareness for our health.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

Organic, raw, unfiltered beer contains loads of B vitamins and folic acid naturally. It is also an excellent source of silica which is a vital part of the bone matrix, and useful for keeping skin, nails and hair in good order!
The silica comes from the outer shell of the barley, which is kept intact in the brewing process.

I am very partial to this type of alcohol, although restirct myself to once or twice a week of about 500ml. I have an extremely fast metabolism, and this amount seems to boost my serotonin levels nicely without any ill effects. The effects felt from alcohol, though, are definately affected by the mood, time of day and food consumption, amongst many other things.

I personally feel that alcohol is a natural part of the human diet, and has it's place in moderation.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

If wine is so bad for you then why did the Creator of mankind(Jesus) turn 60 gallons of water into wine at a wedding feast for all to drink for His first miracle? Wouldn't He know better than to risk the health of His creation?

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

I don't see a problem with an individual enjoying an occaisional glass of wine. It is when it becomes a regular practice and exceeds the one glass mark that it begins to become a detriment.

I do also think that is is valuable to mention something which I have rarely every heard mentioned in heath forums or discussions. The practice of drinking fluids with ones food is a less than ideal one and of course the practice of drinking alcohol with ones food is even less ideal. Fluids dilute the digestive juices and impair the efficiency of the digestive process. Making your fluid an alcoholic one of course includes the additional quality of drugging the nervous system and thus further impairing the digestive process. ................. My recommendation would be to abstain from drinking fluids and especially alcoholic fluids with meals. .... Your digestive system will thank you for it.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Abuse, harass, humiliate, deceive, threaten, impersonate, intimidate or engage in any other abusive behaviors with those who comment on Mercola.com.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT that leads to inebriation.

Combine alcohol consumption with a neuro stimulant (like caffeine loaded soft drinks claiming falsely they give you energy or "wings") and your probability of cardiac arrest is SIGNIFICANTLY increased, up to and including death.

Drink excessive alcohol and/or drive, and you do not act like the monkeys in the video, but rather a JACK ASS.

The allure that this St. Kitt video as being 'cute', fails to recognized that alcohol at any speed, or ingestion, impairs safe behavior, rationality, and healthy outcomes.

Personal abstinence or temperance has worked every time it's been tried.

Proof outlawing alcohol does not work is well document as an utter failure during American Prohibition, that had to be Constitutionally repealed.

One cannot legislate morality or behavior, they must be learned and the benefits exceed the detriments.

re: Don't Monkey Around With Alcohol

Did my son call and tell you to post about this today? LOL

He's five years old and the other day said "Mama, are my lips darker than yours?"

"Yes."

"It's because I'm healthier. You drink too much wine."

One of our docs says that lip color is related to B vitamin status. Though I've found no research to support it, my lip color has improved a great deal and I've noticed most children have darker lips than their mothers, at least in the first few years (but I'm pretty much around moms who breastfeed, so this observation may not generalize).

Anyhoo, like those monkeys, I come from a long line of drinkers. After a baker's dozen deaths this year and two funerals in a day, I was drinking too much and went on the wagon. But just a couple of weeks ago I started drinking wine occasionally again and my son called me on it.

Alcohol does affect your B vitamin status because of the nutrients required to metabolize it.
