I do feel the parents play a large part in educating the children about food and life. As well, they buy most of it and the kids are a product of their environment. AS well, how were they brought up to eat, how were their parents parents brought up to eat and so forth.

Of course way back when their parents parents ate from the land. So when did the kink happen in the healthy chain? We could blame it on society, food companies for not putting out mostly good food, the company's that market their food and so on. So I feel that everyone plays a part in one's obesity, that is part of taking responsability for yourself, which is health. Teaching a kid or telling a parent it is their fault, is just a game of prove and defend, like 3 year olds do.

AS a society, we are so quick to blame this, that or another person and never really acknowledge that is could be us. To me (not saying a young child 100% has to do this, but has to learn as they get older) once people in society start talking ownership of who they are, what they do and what they create, the 3 year old metality of "you did this," "no you did" will dissipate.

re: Parents Have Major Role in Battling Childhood Obesity

Parents are responsible for their children's obesity? Wow. What a breakthrough....

Your children will eat:

What you buy and bring into your home

What you allow them when you take them out to eat

So, if you feel you need a phd in chemistry to read your food label....it's NOT food. If you stay all natural....grass-fed meats, organic fruits and vegetables,,,minimal carbohydrates---grains, breads, pastas....minimal or no dairy....you won't have to worry at all about obesity and the type 2 diabetes that will eventually occur.....

Yes, parents YOU are responsible....so BE responsible....

re: Parents Have Major Role in Battling Childhood Obesity

CONSUME NO:

High Fructose Corn Syrup,

Hyrdolyzed High Fructose Inulin Syrup Illegally Labeled 'Agave',

Crystalline Fructose (It's NOT From Fruit But Refined CORN),

Modified Corn Starches,

Refined Corn Dextrose,

Glucose Syrup

Fructose Syrup

Glucose-Frutose Syrup - An Illegal Avoidance Descriptor On Sports Drink For HFCS

Corn Syrup,

Refined corn Maltodextrin (sometime False Labeled A Glucose Polymers),

Polyols Or Alcohol Distilled Sweeteners Like Maltitol & Mannitol,

ANY High Intensity Sweeteners At Any Level - Sucralose/Splenda, Aspartame/Nutrasweet/Equal, Neotame, Saccharin/Sweet-N'-Low, Asulphame Potassium/Ace-K/Sunnett Brand

All contribute to: OBESITY, CARDIO VASCULAR DISEASE, HYPOGLYCEMIA, SYNDROME X, CANCER, DIABETES, AND PREMATURE DEATH!!! This is not speculation, it is PROVEN!!!

re: Parents Have Major Role in Battling Childhood Obesity

Having daughters (almost three and five years old now), we consider ourselves lucky they're active, lean and healthy. We live in a neighborhood just outside downtown. The weather is great, and the neighbors are outside a lot.

Still, I remember my own youth, when I was outside playing, unsupervised, just about every minute of the day. I don't remember parents even being visible.

As a parent these days, though, I would be scared stiff to have my daughters playing outside by themselves unsupervised. Whether true or not, the media makes us think that is a recipe for disaster, and I believe the perception.

With the kids so nearby us, we feel safe, but are we limiting their activities and independence? As parents, we have lots to do around the house. The kids, by default these days, have to be nearby. Could this be the "real" cause of childhood obesity?

When it rained too hard to play outside when I was young, I do remember watching more TV, asking for more treats, and generally rotting out from the inside. So, is it society, or parents?

re: Parents Have Major Role in Battling Childhood Obesity

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Comment does not pertain to the topic of the article or does not provide value or insight to the discussion.
