(Side joke: Why did the chicken cross the road? Because if was free range of course.) Anyhow, I was a little scared at first giving it to my kids so I drank it first and 24 hours later let them have it. My teenage son loves it so much I hardly get any. I get the milk on Mondays and usually around Friday it's almost gone and he's asking "When do you get the milk again?" I use Lucy's recipe for eggnog and make that in the morning when I can't get the kids to eat breakfast. I keep thinking that if I eat my raw eggs I'll end of having long beautiful hair since I was always told to put a raw egg on the dog's food to keep their coat silky and shiny so I'll keep you up to date on that one.

I have talked friends and family into trying the raw goat's milk and most of them are surprised that it tastes "normal". I do try to be considerate though and let guests know that the milk they are putting into their coffee is indeed raw goat's milk.

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

I really don't drink milk anymore but sometimes want a bowl of whole grain cereal or just crave a glass of milk. I have been using unsweetened vanilla almond milk and like it a lot. I also feel good that I am getting calcium from the almonds.

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

My family drinks raw milk from an Amish farmer. I buy 10 gallons at a time and freeze 9 of them. I froze my breast milk so thought why not raw milk. I know freezing may possibly lose some nutrition but it is better than any other alternative. There has been a very noticable improvement in my kid's ear and teeth problems by consuming raw milk. Just a note on the Dr. Mercola's whey protein. I purchased it and drank it with my raw milk smoothies for 6 months. During that 6 months I had acne and couldn't figure out why. I am 42 years old and never in my life had acne. I finally decided to quit the whey protein and no more acne. I did some research and found out whey protein is not good for Blood Type O's.

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

This is for minnieme and anyone else who is looking for the healthiest possible alternative to breastmilk for their baby when breastfeeding is not an option.
I was physically unable to breastfeed and was (and am) horrified at what is allowed in baby formulas, e.g. hydrolyzed protein, which I now know is basically MSG-a toxin which causes brain lesions. The list of harmful ingredients goes on. And I fed this to my baby for 9 months trusting that if it's something sold for babies that it was safe and beneficial (as advertised). Talk about a wake up call.

I understand how agonizing it can be to find something safe and nourishing for your infant.

I started hunting for a healthier alternative when my baby developed chronic ear infections and I thankfully came upon the website for Weston A. Price which gives the recipe for baby formula using raw milk (I used organic milk until I sourced raw) that corresponds with human breastmilk as closely as possible. There is also a beef or chicken broth based formula. The recipes are from an amazing book I recommend for anyone interested in learning more about nutrition called "Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats". It is my bible when it comes to discovering fact from fiction in regards to food.

The exact address for the formula is www.westonaprice.org/children/recipies.html

I wish you the best of luck in finding the best way to feed your baby and I hope that this is helpful to you.

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

When my children were small, ( the youngest is 31 now) I went to a nearby farm and got raw milk ( not from organic fed animals). Since I can't get raw milk I'm just trying to figure out to work it so I get my calcium, and also how to still enjoy dairy at any level. I've heard many vegetarians and vegans espouse greens for calcium, but I've read spinach (and other raw, healthy vegetables) have oxalate which binds with calcium rendering un- or less absorbable). Also, another nutrition source said they should be cooked to break down the cellular wall. Do you have access to raw dairy? Do you depend on greens as a singular or primary source? Just curious.

Kathie, are you vegan? Do you think dairy is ok if raw?

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

Reesacat, I'd love to have access to raw goat or cow cheese, but the only local health food store that I recently visited didn't have any of that either, and reiterated its illegality.
So I am a recent "raw" convert, but there are a few questions plaguing
me about this way of eating and lifestyle in general. Basically, my
observations have been thus:

When I stick to a strict, low-sugar, high-fiber, exercise-filled diet,
eating as close to raw as possible, I definitely notice the health
benefits. However, if I stray from this regimen for even a few days,
eating junk food, and perhaps smoking a few joints over the weekend, I
immediately contract a cold virus or something. (Last time it was
conjunctivitis!)

I have this nagging feeling that I am not actually strengthening my
immune sytem, but replacing it with an immune-friendly lifestyle, kind
of how allergen-free living leads to the development of allergies. Does
this make any sense to anyone? Any thoughts? Advice is much appreciated.
Whether the milk is ultra-high temperature pasteurized (shelf life of at least 6 weeks) or pasteurized using the older method at lower temperatures (shelf life of about 3 - 4 weeks) makes no difference. The enzymes, vitamins, and good probiotic bacteria are completely destroyed, creating a “dead” food. The milk proteins are denatured (meaning the protein molecules are physically changed), which makes the calcium and magnesium minerals much less absorbable. The denatured proteins also quite commonly cause what people refer to as “milk allergy.”

If you want the wonderful benefits of raw milk, then you must seek out a RELIABLE source of raw milk in your area, even if the sale of raw milk for human consumption is not legal in your state. By “reliable,” I mean a small-operation dairy farmer who has a stable herd of healthy, grassfed (pastured) cows, maintains a clean milking barn, and runs his operation pesticide-free, and antibiotic and growth-hormone free. Most dairy farming operations are very large operations that feed grain- and soy-based diets without allowing their cows to roam free to eat grass and hay in the pasture. Some of these dairy farming businesses have obtained the rather meaningless "organic" certification from their state dept. of agriculture by certifying that they do not use growth hormones or antibiotics on their cows. Then, they ship their milk off to a milk processing plant to be UHT-pasteurized and homogenized. This so-called organic milk is NOT healthy. This is what you get if you buy the so-called organic national brands, Horizon and Organic.

re: Upcoming Flood of Unhealthy Organic Milk

I think you do the best you can with what's available to you ... and just don't worry about what isn't.
