Regretfully, we usually minimize or neglect "intellectual wisdom".

Most of our upbringing and schooling also minimizes our feelings and emotional wisdom.

If I asked, "If you could be born with only one feeling, which one would it be? Most people answer "Happy!" or "Glad!" Is that one feeling enough? Most people answer "Yes!" I reply, then what would you do at a funeral, smile or laugh?

"Well, I guess I would want to be born with the ability to feel sad too."

Is that enough? What would you do if you were at the Grand Canyon looking down and decided to jump down and test the water? Without fear, you just might try it!

Glad, sad, afraid ... are these three feelings enough? What would you do if you took your family hiking in the woods and a bear jumped out and began to attack you? Time to get good and mad ... you'll need the adrenaline to fight the bear and save your family and yourself!

So, we all need anger to survive. When we can accept our anger and express it the right way, stress levels drop and stress symptoms disappear. The process is called "Stress Reduction Through Honesty in Communication". Try it!

re: Think and Grow Healthy

I am working on my mindset this year. We've had a baker's dozen of funerals, all but one were of people far to young to go. With a history of depression, these are not good circumstances.

The movie The Secret actually helped me refocus my thought. In the middle of a very bad time around here, I deliberately chose to focus on one element of my personality -- what I have called my rugged woman side. The morning after my big decision to focus on my rugged nature, the washing machine broke down and I actually drained it, took parts off, and called a guy who would actually know something about it. A few years ago it would have ruined my day (or week). Instead, I was walking around here like a peacock (peahen?) just because I could use a screwdriver.

Perspective is everything.

Then I got a chainsaw for my birthday. I used it yesterday and was prancing around here over that.

I removed treated wood from a play area and actually used power tools to cut and screw in new wood. Before you start laughing, you have to understand that the area in question weighed very heavily on me for a long time. I let it go a couple of years ago and it didn't bother me all that much, but in my new mindset I decided to rebuild the whole thing. Why not?

In the process of re-doing the area with the treated wood, I decided to work on a new system of edging some of the beds. It requires moving a lot of rocks and large redwood slabs. No problem. Living in isolation here on the edge of Sequoia National Forest, I call it the Sierra Gym. There are no annual dues. I was teaching in a school of 3600 in suburban Chicago and was wrestling with delivering a course in the humanities, singlehandedly, that was being team-taught by three separate faculty in our sister school. I was under immense stress and started to experience unendurable pain that no doctor could diagnose. When I began hemorrhaging, exploratory surgery discovered a large (benign) ovarian tumor. My body was sending me a message: change this situation!
Fast-forward many years. I returned from a trip abroad to find that letter we dread, announcing that I had colon cancer. This time my approach was totally positive. It had not penetrated the colon wall; it was just a speed bump on the road to the rest of my life; everything would turn out well. And that's exactly how it happened.

I'm convinced that at least 50% of good health is attitude. We all know people who "enjoy" poor health, right? If you love your job and think life's a kick, you have no time to be sick. If that doesn't describe you, make the changes you need to make so that you can look forward to every new day, full of gratitude for the blessings it brings.

re: What You Think Affects How Healthy You Are

You know it's funny, I first learned this lesson when I was a teenager and read James Clavell's "Shogun" which was a favorite of mine for several years. (the book has much more of an intricate plot than the movie did).
This was the classic attitude portrayed by the Japanese in the story and it made a huge impression on me.
Even when whatever is happening in my life seems to be the exact opposite of what I want, I know that if I'm patient, I will see why it is actually an opportunity for something even better.
Also, when something 'bad' happens I ask myself "will this matter to me in 6 months ... 6 weeks ... 6 days ... 6 hours?" The answer is almost always no, therefore it's not worth getting upset about.

re: What You Think Affects How Healthy You Are

The power of positive thinking can never be under estimated for net benefit.

As the ancient Chinese saying suggests: "In every disaster there is opportunity."

re: What You Think Affects How Healthy You Are

One's health is determined by the energy that is inside of oneself. What I mean by that is that living things have energy. In order to be healthy you need to consume living energetic foods, engage in appropriate exercise that moves blood and lymph and produce positive thoughts that impact us from moment to moment. This theory is so sound and almost should be common sense. Although in this day and age it takes dedication, education and motivation to transform oneself from our peers to become a role model of perfect health in mind, body & spirit.

re: What You Think Affects How Healthy You Are

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Comment does not pertain to the topic of the article or does not provide value or insight to the discussion.
