Presently, I would not trust anything the Government told me, because the Government only has the best interests of "Big Business" at heart. So personally I find Government labels to be as about as useful as utters on a bull. If The Government told me the sky was blue, I would look first, before excepting the Government's claim.

Beware of your Government, as in Medical certification, certifing a food product as organic, would take more than a Government endorsement. Look at the 100's of medications our Government endorses, as useful, and safe, only to find out later these medications were indeed dangerous, and are only a crutch, for ailes you.

If at all possible, grow your own. If not join an Organic Foods co-op.

I just got around to reading the comments, and one at the end disturbed me. As a seller at our local farmer's market, it is very hard for us small time "farmers" to obtain a certified organic label, and quite expensive. You can only say you are certified if you have been; otherwise you can get into a lot of trouble and possibly get the whole market shut down. (This is the case in Oregon). Personally, I grow all my lettuce, peas, carrots, beans, tomatoes, etc. without pesticides, or growth products, but I cannot say I'm organic because of the cost of the stupid certification. Your damned if you do, damned if you don't. All I do is sell the extra's that God has blessed me with, and want to get healthy foods out there for others. Please, support your local growers. Indeed, ask questions, but don't put them down because they may not be certified organic; it's just too costly for that piece of paper.
By the way, have you thought about the chemicals you put on your body when you use commercial soap and shampoos? I am a stay at home mom who makes homemade soap as a way to get some extra money.
If you have the opportunity, support your homemade soap makers. Yes, it does cost more, but consider what you're not putting into your body. Skin has pores and that commercial junk leaches into it.

Time to grow your own or get involved in a local garden co-op and start canning or culturing. No question what is in the food that way.

By the way, I signed an online petition to protect the organic standards and now they are calling me just about every other day for money.

I have a modest income and do what I can, but I get really peeved off when I am harassed more more money after I already make a donation. I am very sketical about giving to charities because most of the money goes to solicitation of more money. Yes, I do donate, but to local charities where I can see what my dollars are doing.

While this cause is a very good one, I found them to be very pushy. I want to be effective and can appreciate that they are very dedicated, but their over zealousness is a turn off. I do not like to be made to feel like what I am able to do to help is not enough by them trying to "wear me down" with guilt and harassment. If you sign the petitions, be prepared to either empty your pockets or deal with the harassment.

I have been following the ups and downs of the organic foods for a couple of years now. There is only one person that is responsible for ensuring you have an organic product in your hands...that is you. You cannot trust any government agency to keep your food safe. It is so simple, do not buy processed foods. I also signed a petition against the 38 added non-organic products as I will sign any petition that aids in protecting our foods from the contaminants foisted on us either on or off the label. I grow my own vegetables without being certified organic because "I know they are"! I support the local farmers by also buying at the Farmer's Market and when I don't see the organic label, I start asking questions. Be bold about the questions because the farmer wants to sell his produce and will do what it takes to get certified. For those companies addressing the USDA to make these changes: it is a conspiracy to make money for themselves at your expense. I say, don't buy any of their products and write to them and tell them that. They will do nothing unless they see a drop in their bottom line that is tied to their organic practices. The late, great cowboy star, Will Rogers once said, "America has the best politicians that MONEY CAN BUY"! It may have been a "joke" back then, but today, it amounts to GENOCIDE, in my opinion. Petitions, no matter how large, cannot equal the influence of millions of dollars in kickbacks, bribes, and "favors". In the 1920's, the FBI created the "Untouchables". . . A group of ultra-dedicated law enforcement agents who could not be "bought off"by the likes of Al Capone, the notorious Chicago "bootlegger". Perhaps it's time for consumers and true "organic growers" to form their own national agency, staffed by persons with high moral and ethical values, who are "untouchable" by the insatiable greed of corrupt industry. That agency could then monitor agricultural activity, and truly certify compliance by "registered" organic growers. I personally would be willing to pay "a couple of bucks extra" every month, to know for certain that an "untouchable", NON-GOVERNMENTAL agency was seeing to it that my food doesn't contain the "seeds" of an eventual "bumper crop" of diseases to make the pharmaceutical industry "happy". That industry looks upon "disease" as a super profitable "commodity", no different than real estate, gems, precious metals, or petroleum. What say?

The bottom line is not to trust the government or industry in making foods and specifically processed foods truly organic. The best possible solution is to "grow your own". There is no doubt (at least in my mind) that GM foods will also sneak into the equation of what is organic in the eyes of the government and the food industry. Organic fertilizers are also at risk. This is the current age we live, the Executive & Legislative Branches of this government as so ruled by the current Judicial Branch of this government as of this month rule in District of Columbia Court of Appeals: The Executive & Legislative Branches which includes all its subsidiary AGENCIES mind you and all public appointed officers and employee's thereto, have NO obligation at law to respond or to provide remedy to any petitions of redress from ANY group of American citizens, ON any ISSUE due to various reason that include; The Judiciary (the Supreme Court of the Land) interpreting and making legislation from the Bench. e.g, "Judicial Review", REFUSING to hear case's of any importance relative your health and well-being as well as to your "elected" legislative bodies, i.e., doctrine of Political Question, Congress reserving and having the right to deny or modify or interpret language of the Constitution (This case has been ruled) as CONGRESS deems fit and proper for its agenda while ALL, the Executive, The Legislative and the Judiciary basically operate under complete protection against any redress from the People through---- SOVEREIGN IMMUNITY which now has been extended to various industry CORPORATES as well. This is reality as we live and breathe today. So unless all Court benches are cleared, Legislative Houses cleared and non-politician lawyers are never elected to Executive position(s), is this going to happen? I live in New Zealand and we are in a position to do a silent protest on this one. Along with my husband, we have refused to buy any organic product from the USA because we do not trust them to be truly organic as we understand organic and the situation described here only serves to strenthen our resolve on this issue. We own a farm in NZ that is currently under organic certification. The organic standards here in NZ are very strict and are controlled by the organic certifying organisations such as Biogro and Demeter. Government departments have no say in what may or may not be called organic.

Another reason not to buy processed food whether it is organic or not. Make your own food from scratch and then you don't have to worry about added ingredients.

And that's not all, folks. Now the FDA proposes to do away with radiation labeling on foods that have been irradiated.

"For years, the irradiation industry has had a problem convincing consumers to buy irradiated food. The industry's solution? Don't tell them it's irradiated.

"Right now, food treated with ionizing radiation must be labeled as "Treated with irradiation" or "Treated by radiation." The irradiation industry wants to label these foods as "electronically pasteurized" or "cold pasteurized," which is misleading.

"Studies have shown irradiation depletes the nutritional content of food and leaves behind chemical byproducts that can lead to promotion of cancer growth and genetic damage.

"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just proposed a rule that would allow the use of the term "pasteurized" on some types of irradiated food and not require any labeling on others. We deserve to know whether or not our food has been irradiated."

This makes me want to ask a question that has been on my mind for a while. We know that fresh fruits are transported over huge distances. So if some fresh fruit is certified organic, does this mean that it has been ripened naturally without any chemicals, powder, synthetic forms of natural ethylene, etc ? (because the usual practice is to pluck the fruits before maturity & then powder it, gas it, etc) I hope someone has an answer, rather than just guesses.
