I have also had general anesthesia for other surgeries in the past (broken leg, gallbladder removal). Since my most recent surgery, I have noticed that my recall of people's names has worsened and that the more elegant vocabulary words somtimes elude me maddeningly during conversation.

So what am I doing to cope with this problem? Technical writing is my profession, so I like to write about various subjects as often as I can (such as writing posts on this site!) while taking time off from work to regain my health and perspective on life. Also, I listen to my extensive collection of classical music (very good for the brain), and do Sudoku puzzles (which I am good at, but I take more time to solve puzzles than I would like). In the near future, I will take up a new foreign language and would like to start taking piano lessons again (after a 48 (plus)-year hiatus).

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

From a kinesiology perspective, anaesthetics affect the kidneys, and its the main cause of people being 'scrambled' after surgery.
I had a nurse client who had an allergy to something in the operating room. I tested her in the operating room (I had to scrub up) and guess what? Yes, anaesthetic - just the tiny amount that may have escaped from the patient! Imagine if she had an operation. Anyway she was fine after the correction.
There is a new anaesthetic that doesn't cause this reaction, but I don't know what its called.
Philip

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

Each of the 11 times the quackery gave me shock treatment in 2000, they gave me general anesthesia. People die from general anesthesia. Never was I warned of the risks. Not to mention the brain damage of the electrical voltage. I can't for the life of me undestand why this evil, Nazi-like practice is legal. They made 20,000 dollars off my insurance from that scam. One fellow victim who actually helped them talk me into getting it was a woman with MS. Can you imagine the barbarism of giving someone with an already damaged nervous system shock treatment? The way the quackery coerced me into giving into this was through brain-washing with Ativan.

I am so lucky to be alive. Does anyone out there know what can be done to ban shock treatment again? It was once illegal.

Speaking of Ativan---in my opinion this poison is the primary cause of Alzheimers. I know in nursing homes they dope victims to oblivion on this sh**. Every doctor I ever talked to about Ativan claimed it's not addictive. When I had seizures and delirium tremens from it, they made fun of me and said I was having seizures to get attention. I have seen with my own eyes in emergency rooms how they abuse elderly people with Ativan. Ativan is like a fifth of whisky in a little pill, yet I've seen them feed it to alcoholics in loony bins. Why is this poison legal? Why do they lie? How do they get away with it? I never drank, yet I still have the shakes from Ativan as if I were some sort of recovering alcoholic. I'm not the only one. Ban Ativan, Xanax and Klonopin now and Alzheimers will be virtually eliminated.

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

I have practiced nursing for over 25 years and it is my opinion that anestheia will cause a variety of issues, some that may last long term. I had not heard it associated with Alzheimers before.

One thing I have seen on several occasions it sleep apnea after surgery up to 8 to 12 weeks post op. In the couple of cases I saw it seemed to pass off.

This indicates that anestesia has severely disturbed central nervous system function. Fortunately for those I saw they did get better. I have never heard this mentioned as a side effect of anesthesia but I know it happens to some people.

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

Is there anything that Modern Medicine does without negative side effects?

Hardly, this just adds to the problems associated with the Cut, Burn, and Poison Policy!!

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

Sugar = Poison!

Avoid refined sugar or sweeteners, high intensity artificial sweeteners and alcohol distilled polyol sweeteners like the plague.

re: Anesthesia: The Newest Alzheimer's Risk Factor

Yes, stay away from the scalpel...Intervention leads to intervention leads to intervention then you're dead...
