Based on recent numbers, traffic accidents were the leading cause of death for Americans under age 35, a real tragedy considering many of these fatalities are preventable. The best means to avoid car accidents: Being aware of your surroundings, especially in areas around the United States with the dumbest drivers, as calculated by test scores from consumers taking the GMAC Insurance driving test.
The Auto Spies Web site, one of the best on the Internet to learn about new cars, lists the average scores for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The good news: Fifteen of the top 20 states with the smartest drivers live west of the Mississippi River. If you live in the Northeast, however, the news isn't so good. The bottom five, based on test scores:

- Washington, D.C.
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- New York
