Magnets Can Strengthen Your Mind

Tests in mice have shown that stimulating the brain with a magnetic coil appears to promote the growth of new neurons in areas associated with learning and memory.

If there is a similar effect in humans, it could lead to new ways of treating age-related memory decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) refers to the use of a magnetic coil to induce electric fields in the brain tissue, which activates or deactivates groups of neurons.

It's thought that this process, called long-term potentiation (LTP), may help to strengthen brain circuits, thereby aiding learning and memory. It has previously been used experimentally to treat a range of brain disorders, including depression and schizophrenia, and to rehabilitate people after a stroke.

In the latest experiment, mice were given TMS for five days, after which their brains were analyzed for evidence of cell proliferation. Proliferation was enhanced in all areas of the brain tested, and there were large increases in the proliferation of stem cells in the dentate gyrus hippocampus. These cells are believed to play a crucial role in memory and mood regulation.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Magnet therapy is very exciting, and I have been intrigued with it for some time. While it rarely treats the cause of the problem, it certainly is far less dangerous than using drugs and, used wisely, is typically without side effects.

This is one type of therapy I would encourage you to consider and be sensitive to what future studies show that further document its efficacy and indications.

But beware because FDA regulations render it illegal to market any magnet therapy product that claims to treat any "significant" condition such as cancer, HIV, AIDS, asthma, arthritis, or rheumatism. So you will have to add the pieces together yourself because anyone who seeks to sell them to you will be clamped down by the FDA, as we all know that the primary purpose of the FDA is to "protect you."

Nevertheless, I've previously written about magnets to help with depression and even recently to avoid shark attacks, but now researchers have uncovered another potential: warding off Alzheimer's disease and age-related mental decline.

As the population continues to age, the number of people with Alzheimer's disease is expected to increase some 70 percent.

We are in the midst of an Alzheimer's epidemic. About 4.5 million people are affected today, and it is estimated that this number will increase to 7.7 million by 2030. Experts are calling this great increase in Alzheimer's cases a "looming public health disaster" that could potentially turn into an unmanageable health care crisis. So any potential cure deserves attention.

However, while this type of magnet therapy sounds promising, the best option when it comes to Alzheimer's and mental decline is to avoid it entirely. Mental decline is NOT a normal part of aging, and you can help protect your brain and mind by:

I am researching and using magnets in my practice.  I have
Google set to search for magnets daily; so alongside Mercola's blog was one for a Japanese company that found using magnets in meat packaging preserved meat 1/3 longer than without magnet.
But seriously magnets change the speed of electrons therefore change the structure of water so that it is more bioactive.   In clinical practice the use of a magnet on swollen tissue during therapy speeds up reduction by 1/3 to 2/3.  If inflammation is involved in formation of tangled protean scars in the brain then I believe magnets can help.  I prefer permanent magnets that do not generate EMF frequencies that tissue may not be able to cope with.

Hmmmm, how about I just rely on my (pardon the groaner pun) 'magnetic personality'?

If an electro magnetic field from a cell phone is not the best strategy, I'm not about to start messing with magnets any time soon for my health.

Reduction, elimination and reversal of oxidative stress through sound nutritional intake, regular low impact exercise, EFT, metabolic typing and diet, and other wonderful suggests of the Vital Votes seem to me to be of much higher priority.

So maybe I should get some duct tape , some earth magnets, and wrap them around my head.  getting smarter. and hope that it will pull any heavy metals out of me(hahaha.)

Hey Cheftodd - what if we swallowed magnets instead?    ;-)

Whatever you do guys watch out the almighty FDA might git ya !!!
Suggest a buddy system when going to buy em.

I wonder what effect those magnets might have on their handcuffs - perhaps Houdini like ????

One thing you must  know about this subject is that electro magnetism waves are unhealthy and permanent magnet waves can have many benefits. They include things like improved circulation and healing to pain reduction and mood improvement. So before you doubt  its many ways of improveing your life and health do some research and you will be amazed. Its inexpensive and easy .

The earth has a magnetic field, and people also have a magnetic charge.  It is when you try to change the magnetic field and frequency that you run into problems.  I am sure there is a difference between EMF's and regular magnetic fields, but I sure can not explain it.

I thought anything that increases cell growth has the potential to cause cancer.  Think I'll just walk in the woods and rely on the sun's and the earth's magnetic fields for my dose of antidepressant!

Mary, the difference between electro-magnetic frequencies and magnetism is the electricity, which generates radiation.  Magnets themselves don't generate radiation, although magnets are used in engines and electrical generating plants.  Our bodies do have a small amount of voltage as well as a magnetic field, or "aura."  The earth's gravity is a magnetic pull.  The sun's radiation is not harmful, thanks to the ozone layer and other factors.  But EMF's that are too close to us can cause cancer.  Isn't it amazing how we live in perfect balance with the earth and the sun?

I find this very interesting, especially as a migraine sufferer.  I have recently read an article saying this therapy has shown positive (ha more magnet puns!) signs for helping with these awful headaches.
Anyone else hear of this?
Also, it is troubling to see that alzheimers and dementia and other congnitive issues are becoming so much more common and in younger and younger folks.  Makes me wonder?  Is this from the newer "wonder" drugs that all seem to be using these days.
We know that the statin drugs cause more harm than good...how about all the other crap drs. are pushing on the middle-aged folks now??
I have to wonder if a lot of these issues are being caused by our wonderful well-meaning BIG PHARMA companies.
Lipitor, Paxil, Fosamax, Vioxx, Zoloft, etc. etc....all poisions, all with awful side effects....all do nothing to maintain health either....
oh, except the wallet health of the BIG PHARMA big shots!
Lipitor causes serious memory issues.  Have to wonder how full our nursing homes and assisted living places will become soon thanks to this great drug!  Are the BIG PHARMAS going to start paying for our loved ones to live in these expensive facilities?

I read an article that stated 80% of migraine sufferers are allergic to wheat.

I gave up wheat-no more migraines!

Don't know if that would help you-I know how painful and debilitating
migraines are.  Best wishes on becoming migraine-free!

Have you gotten your mercury fillings removed?  I used to have one in my upper left molar, and I always got nasty pains right in that area, but not on the right side.  I got the filling removed two years ago, and the headaches are gone.

I know of two leading physician/researchers applying static magnetic fields for profound therapeutic effects. In my opinion, they are true geniuses -- and they are motivated by compassion.

The first is Dean Bonlie, D.D.S.
http://www.magneticosleep.com/magnetico/about-dr-dean/

The second is cardiologist James Roberts, M.D., F.A.C.C.
http://www.heartfixer.com/IndexMME.htm

Let me mention that I am not affilated with either physician. I use Dr. Bonlie's 10 gauss staric field sleep pad and I am pretty sure it is beneficial. I intend to use Dr. Roberts' installation of an advanced system developed by Dr. Bonlie if any s more serious problem comes up. Other physicians are using this system (bottom of page):

I hope this message benefits many of you.
