Man With Green Blood Shocks Surgeons

MigraineA group of Canadian surgeons were surprised to find that the 42 year old man they were operating on had dark-green blood.

Analysis revealed that the blood discoloration was caused by sulfhemoglobinaemia, which happens when a sulfur atom becomes attached the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin protein present in blood.

The condition was likely caused by the patient's migraine medication, sumatriptan, which contains a sulfonamide group.

After going off sumatriptan, his blood returned to normal within five weeks.

Sulfhemoglobinaemia usually goes away as red blood cells regenerate, but can necessitate a transfusion in extreme cases.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Yet another side effect of modern medical "miracles" In this case green blood from taking an anti-migraine medication.

Headaches are so common that Americans dish out more than $1 billion every year to get relief from migraines. The pain associated with migraines can be so severe that some patients will actually consider suicide as a reasonable alternative. When you consider the options of suicide or a pill, the pill certainly seems to be the better solution, at least at first.

The problem is, the pills can cause as many problems as they solve, if not more. In addition to potentially turning your blood green, headache drugs can actually give you a "medication overuse headache" or, in the case of sumatriptan, a withdrawal headache when you stop using it. Why take a headache pill that will give you a headache?

This is particularly tragic because there so many simple, inexpensive and effective alternatives. Fortunately, you don't have to risk these unpleasant and strange side effects, because there are plenty of natural and effective remedies for your migraines.

Energy psychology techniques like
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) work amazingly well to get rid of migraines, even in as short a time as five minutes. Most migraines also seem to have a food-based reaction relating to wheat, dairy, sugar, or artificial preservatives or chemicals.

Eliminating these foods and incorporating the other principles in my nutrition plan frequently improves migraines as well. Generally there is a 70-80 percent reduction in the frequency and intensity of the pain after people begin following the eating plan.

I used to get agonizing bouts of sinus headaches before I gave up all sugars and breads.  They would last two days to a week. After I gave them up, the sinusitis never returned. To this day I remain free of them.

I never took any medication for my migraine headaches which I had over a 10-year period. I just waited for the pain to end. Then one day, my Dentist announced that he was sending me to an oral surgeon. My gums were infected so I had "gum surgery" to correct the problem. Ever since then (approximately 35 years), I have not had even one migraine. Migraines are a symptom of a problem. You have to find out what is causing it.

time and time again people need to be reminded, in ways like this now, that drugs are unnatural.

so now other people dying isn't enough anymore, someone has to see their own blood turn green in order to stop taking medication? shame.

This includes birth control pills. They are not natural. BCP caused me to get migraines almost every day.  About 3-4 months after I got off of them they totally went away.  From what I have read it takes your body at least that long to recover from birth control.  Now I use Ladycomp and it's awesome!

High fructose corn syrup gives me a migraine almost instantly.  So does MSG and aspartame. Thank God I was able to find this out without going on migraine medication.

I wonder if people are confusing severe headaches with migraines.

A migraine can be disabling — with symptoms so severe, all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Up to 17 percent of women and 6 percent of men have experienced a migraine.

In some cases, these painful headaches are preceded or accompanied by a sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is also often accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine pain can be excruciating and may incapacitate you for hours or even days.

A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms:

  • Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides
  • Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality
  • Pain that worsens with physical activity
  • Pain that interferes with your regular activities
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound

When left untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person. You may have migraines several times a month or just once or twice a year.

I have an IUD that has hormones in it to help prevent pregnancy, but I've been trying to find an effective alternative. Thank you for mentioning Ladycomp because I never would have found it if you hadn't said something. I'm looking into it immediately.

Maj,

I am glad you are getting rid of your IUD.  I am a family practice physician and I can honestly tell you that IUD's (and birth control pills for that matter) work by causing abortions.  Period.  Most people falsely believe that the hormonal IUD's work to prevent pregnancy -- the pharmaceutical company wants the patient to BELIEVE that it prevents ovulation, but in fact it does not truly do this.

The lies and deceptions in the medical field make me ill.  Kudos to Dr. Mercola for bringing them out in the open!

I think this shows soe\me of the dangers of to much medication.  And I think most VV readers will understand the findings.

Once again, a medicine that masks the symptoms.  No migraine medicine will "fix" the cause of the migraine.  A healthy spine/nervous system is the answer!

Once I stopped eating refined sugars I stopped having migraines. I can use raw agave nectar without getting a migraine. I use it to sweeten the raw chocolate bars I make.

Also, I will only go to a non-force chiropractor if my back is out and causes a migraine. This works every time for me.

I heard that some doctors were actually prescribing some good medicine for the relief of migraines. Their prescription-don't take anything with monosodium glutamate (MSG) in it.   The bad news is, the last article I saw on it, they had about three dozen different names for MSG so we can't reconize it on the food labels. One I recall is yeast abstract. Now that really does remind me of the man that tied himself to a tree.

As someone who suffers frequent and debilitating migraines, please understand that not all headaches are migraines, and not all  migraines are created equal.

Dr. Mercola and people who read his articles should understand where I'm coming from. In my case, my migraines are from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The etiology of this illness has been thoroughly described by Dr. Martin Pall at Washington State University's School of Molecular Biosciences. It is the result of a CHEMICAL INJURY, and the migraines and other symptoms are the result of altered chemical behavior in the brain and body. The existence of these chemicals and the altered state of the body's ability to deal with them cannot be fooled into going away via EFT, ESPECIALLY when one can't even touch a pillow to his head without tremendous pain. I can also attest to the inability of any number of natural cures to control them. I can't begin to tell you how many concoctions, pharmaceutical and natural, I've tried over the past 10 years. The only thing that works is Imitrex (occasionally supplimented by an opioid) and I thank God for it. If it's really bad I have to use Demerol.

If you care to look over Pall's explanation, you'll see that he works with physicians who advocate a natural solution to mitigate the problem via supplementation, though it admittedly is highly unlikely to cure it. I use a regime based on these recommendations and it certainly helps -- and yes, MSG avoidance helps also and there's a very good reason for that which fits right into the cycle he explains.

My bottom line is that there IS occasionally a place for pharmaceutical intervention.

Swami,

You sound like you have just accepted your situation. I dont know your position, but it doesnt sound like you are hell-bent on finding a solution. Two words that I believe will help you no end:

1. Detox
Toxins get stored, and chemical ones are no exception. Get em out, and your body can start to heal properly. The body has incredible powers of repair and rejuvination.

2. Fruit
After a huge amount of research, I believe this is mostly (80% plus) what we are meant to eat. There are a lot of almost miraculous stories on the web about the healing power of fruit diets.

Hope this helps
