Rising Food Allergies May be Linked to Genetically Engineered Foods

Genetically modified (GM) crops, some of which contain their own built-in pesticides that split open the stomachs of the insects that consume them, are having serious health consequences on humans, according to this excellent article by Jeffrey Smith, the leading U.S. expert on GM foods.

Of particular concern is the pesticide called Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), which is produced in some GM crops. Though organic farmers have used solutions containing this natural bacteria for years as a method of insect control, GM plants produce about 3,000-5,000 times the amount of toxin as these sprays.

Further, a Bt-producing GM plant continuously produces the toxin in every cell, where it does not dissipate by weather and cannot be washed off, as is the case with the topical solutions.

Mice fed Bt-toxin showed significant immune responses that indicated exposure might make a person allergic to a wide range of substances. Meanwhile:

  • People exposed to Bt sprays have reacted with allergy and flu-like symptoms
  • Hundreds of agricultural workers exposed to Bt cotton have developed allergic reactions
  • Pollen from Bt corn may cause allergies
  • Bt toxin has failed safety studies, but is used nonetheless

GM crops have already been linked to a number of other disturbing events -- such as producing herbicide in your intestines and contributing to the disappearance of honeybees. Only time will tell how many more unforeseen effects will be springing up in the years to come.

Until action is taken to put labels on GM foods, it’s best to protect yourself from these “frankenfoods” now, by choosing foods that are organically grown or raised near you.

Good one, Katy B!

Scary to think this may not only be funny, it may be true!

I think that because corn is one of the largest selling crops in the USA, right along side soybeans, we are going to find more and more problems with organic crops that have been cross contaminated with GMO crops.  I believe that this is linked to the huge increase in Gastrointestinal diseases among children and adults in this country. It is imperative that we do all we can to support the organic farmers who are trying to give us quality products.

Even organic corn is making me have a rash and alot of fatigue.  I wonder if the GMO contamination is enough to make me react like I do
to regular corn.

I'm fine with other fruits and vegtables-just no corn, wheat, cow dairy
and soy.  If I avoid those I feel great!

Sorry to hear homeopathy messed you up.  It is generally very safe, but
like any other modality you can have a problem with it.

I'm so glad you are writing again.  Be well,

Dawn

Reesacat, I remember reading that you use homeopathy.  When I was using homeopathy in 2005 I used to react almost exactly like this every time I ate fruit and vegetables.  In fact, I used to get seizures sometimes, and sharp headaches.  It was devastating.  I am certain it was the toxins (or the energy?) from the homeopathy that remained in my mouth that I was swallowing every time I ate something I had to chew a lot.  I still have some of that stuff in my mouth.  It seems to take years to get rid of it.

The homeopathy seemed to miraculously 'cure' me at first.  Then when I'd eat, I'd get these horrible reactions.  So I thought I needed a second dose, or a different medicine.  I poisoned myself with it.  I wonder if this may have contributed to your CFS?  I think homeopathy played a big role in my CFS. Wish I'd never used it.

GMOs will no doubt disrupt life as we know it.   Once we begin connecting cause to effect, it might be too late as this dangerous and reckless technology is irreversible.  And more than half of our corn and soy is already genetically engineered in this country with no precautions to stop genetic drift that naturally happens in open fields.   The Campaign To Label has been working for years to have the gmo contents on labels.  But that is non-existent on GMO containing foods- estimated to be contained in about 70% or more on your grocery shelves (among packaged and processed foods).

This is one of the most urgent and important topics of our day and I urge more reporting in this area.  Robyn O'Brien at Allergy Kids  is also beginning to connect the dots.  Hers is a good site to visit.!

While listening to Jeff Smith on Coast to Coast radio one night, he also mentioned that it has been discovered the bacteria in the soil are mutating in response to the Bt in Gm corn. Basically--once these genes are spliced in unnatural ways, they are like rogue elements that can contaminate in ways no one can foresee. Thank you Monsanto for better living through chemistry.
Check with your state for pharma crops and Gm crops--then buy from growers' markets that are up wind from any!! BTW, Jeff's first book , Seeds of Deception is excellent, and listening to the discussion on his newest book--Genetic Roulette, it is even scarier.
