Sand More Deadly Than Sharks at Beach

SandOver two dozen children and young adults have died in the last ten years when sand holes collapsed on them.

The father-and-son team of Dr. Barry Maron and Dr. Bradley Maron have made it their goal to alert people to the danger, after seeing a lifeguard responding to a collapse that engulfed an 8 year old girl.

According to these doctors, sand hole collapses can occur horrifyingly fast. Victims can became completely submerged in the sand when the walls of the hole unexpectedly collapse, leaving no evidence of either the hole or the location of the victim.

Although people worry more about better-known threats like shark attacks, there have been a third again as many sand-hole deaths since 1990 as there have been shark-related deaths.

To reduce the danger, parents are advised not to let young children play in sand unattended, and no one should get into a sand hole deeper than their knees.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

While sand hole collapses occur more frequently than shark attacks, it is an issue that has not garnished much attention compared to the more gory summer-time threat. In fact, shark attacks are generally relatively rare when compared to more subtle dangers at the beach.

I will repeat the excellent advice from the article: do not let young children play in sand unattended, and do not get into a hole that is deeper than your knees. You could find yourself, or your children, buried quicker than you would believe possible.

But it is the real deal and just be careful out there at the beach.

For more summer safety tips, check out these five ways to protect your kids this season. And, in case you still worry about sharks as well, check out How to Avoid Being Bit by Sharks, which tells you how to at least deal with the shark scenario.

This time of year is also a great time to brush up on your CPR skills, or take a class if you haven't done so already. If you find yourself in a situation where CPR is needed but you're not trained in the proper procedure, chest compression alone has also been found to be an effective form of CPR.

How about we move the sand holes to exclusive golf clubs that OIL, PHARMA, FOOD AND SODA EXCUTIVES FREQUENT?

Brings a whole new aspect to 'green' fees.

I don't think it is necessarily over the top response here.  One of the things I look for at Mercola.com is the little known, and I would say this counts for that.  Oftentimes the news media does not report on cause of death for children, just lists as accidental if anything.  So, we are very uninformed about many dangers of childhood - such as pool drownings.

I had a nephew recently drown in a neighbor's pool.  He was 3.  There was NO news coverage at all.  In my opinion there should be lots of news coverage, and lots of new warnings issued to possibly prevent another tragedy.  Even if the article saves one life, it is worth it to that one child's parents and family.  That is why I find articles like this important and useful.

According to Steven Levitt "Freakonomics" your child is 100 times more  likely to die in a pool than from visiting a neighbor's house where the neighbor owns a gun.

Ah, you're making the very common mistake of believing the Mad Morons of Modern Mainstream Media (M5) have anyone's best interests at heart other than their own.  The sole extent they give a crap whether anyone lives or dies is the potential loss of ratings if the viewing population declines.

You don't see any reporting of routine child deaths for the very reason that they are routine (unfortunately) and not the least bit sensational.

For them, it's not about public service, or concern for humanity, it's not about truth, safety, good medicine vs. bad, it's not even about children except for the emotional mileage they can squeeze out of that, it's all about money -- nothing more and nothing less.  More sensationalism and more ADHD discontinuity is their formula to keep "the great unwashed masses of the proletariat" ("Viewers like you") glued to the tube anxiously awaiting the next upcoming push-button titillation.  The higher the ratings, they more they can bilk their advertisers for the privilege of selling you more Ford F-150's, junk food, and purple pills.

50,000,000 million American children alone, plus untold hundreds of millions more in China & around the world, slaughtered before ever taking their first breath, is a fine idea to them -- plenty more future viewers will be born to replace them anyway, so what's the big deal over half a billion tiny corpses in dumpsters around the world, anyway?

rcritter, exactly.

The reason being that everyone mentally over the age of three understands that guns are inherently dangerous -- otherwise they'd be useless for their intended purpose! -- but almost everyone is perfectly comfortable in & around water.  "Familiarity breeds contempt" and that easy familiarity breeds contempt for its inherent drowning hazard -- except of course when there's no land in sight.  So people get foolishly careless.  Plus, a gun actually has to pointed directly at someone at the instant it goes off in order to hurt someone.  Water simply has to be above your head.  People even drown in bathtubs, and babies drown in pails when they can't back out after falling in head-first.

But that's simply NOT SENSATIONAL!!!!!, in the eyes of the M5.

So it won't keep tens of millions of sheeple glued to the tube in order to boost ratings for more money from advertisers selling all the sheeple more Ford F-150's, more Soilent Green manufactured Foodah, and more Purple Pills.

So because it doesn't pay them, they don't bother reporting it.  It's a non-issue to them.

I never heard about sand collapses before.  Many people go to the beach during the summer and if this can prevent one needless death it is worth publishing.

I used to live in a beach area and never knew of this danger.  I am glad that it is being brought to light.  Though, it may not have the live-saving or life-changing impact that most here are looking for...if it saves one life then it is worth it!

I used to dig holes all the time in the sand when I was a child.  I know I had one that was at least 6 feet deep that at least 3 children could fit into...imagine it that had collapsed!  I wouldn't be here now.  At least I now know not to let my child engage in the same beach activities as I once did.

Haven't you ever seen sand cliffs? What an invitation for any red-blooded youngster to start digging a cave! I started to do this once after heavy weather had eroded the dunes some 55 years ago during our annual holidays on our Aussie Gold Coast, envisaging my own cubby-house-cum-cave. Well, my mother nearly freaked out! She had been on a Sydney beach as a child when a 'cave' collapsed, killing a child! Further up the beach, later that day a child was fatally trapped as the deceptively enticing sand dumped itself. It could have been me perhaps! Also, in all our combined years at the beach, we were never witess to a shark death, let alone shark attack!
Sand- 2
Sharks- nil
Big Pharma- pick a number!
