New York Sues Merck Over Vioxx, Seeking Reimbursement for Taxpayer Dollars

Seeking to recoup tens of millions spent by government-financed health programs on prescriptions for Vioxx, New York State and New York City joined yesterday in filing a lawsuit against Merck, the drug’s maker, which withdrew the painkiller from the market in 2004 because of dangerous side effects.

The lawsuit, filed yesterday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, accuses Merck & Company of intentionally concealing the dangers of Vioxx, and therefore defrauding the state Medicaid program, which paid for the prescriptions. The drug was used to treat arthritis and migraines but led to a high risk of heart attacks and strokes.

That's GREAT to hear!!  I hope they get everything that they sue for.  I truly despise MERK.

I hope New York and the other states get everything they asked for, with the provision that it be used for preventative health care, such as found on Dr. Mercola's web site.

Good luck, Mary, on persuading any government run healthcare system to focus on prevention.  Keeping people healthy in the first place would just be too easy.

I agree, Mary. What goes round comes around to haunt them (and their shareholders too). Like the rest of them, they have taken a herb or plant , put there for our natural healing, ripped the heart out of it, cast the rest aside, including the vital life force, ground it up and put it in a bottle, to sell and make their fortune. Bah!
