The higher a body mass index you have, the less likely you are to receive a kidney transplant.
Researchers studied more than 130,000 patients registered for kidney transplantation. They found that obese people were 8 percent less likely to receive a transplant, the severely obese were 28 percent less likely, and the morbidly obese (those with a BMI over 40) were 44 percent less likely.
Obese patients are more likely to have complications. However, standard practice is to assign organs only on the basis of how long a patient has been waiting.
